Another interesting angle to this is whether the pick was obvious or not. Meaning, the poll here is really “who’s the best player on this list?” When the best PICK might be someone else.

So for example, we might agree Hannah is the best player (best offensive lineman ever, kind of hard to argue with) but if he was the obvious pick (I don’t know if he was) then another guy might be the better pick.

Make sense? I haven’t had coffee yet so good chance it doesn’t.

We've had some good ones but our best one might have been one of the ones Goodell took from us

Spent on motivation. Seems like it was worth it at least the second time.

Those placing Ty Law ahead of Mike Haynes have obviously never seen Mike Haynes play.
No disrespect to Law, but Haynes was simply better...much better.

Mike Haynes was a star as a rookie.

Big Sey should have way more votes than that he was a Beast in the middle and started it all on D. Also no Bruce Armstrong:confused: our only Pro Bowler in those lean years??

Had to go with McGinist, all time postseason sack leader, undisputed leader in the locker room, leader and playmaker on the field, mentor to Brady and one hot competitive fire burning inside. Hannah was great, played his worst game in the SB as opposed to Willie who always came up biggest in the biggest games.

You really have to include Stanley Morgan and Mike Haynes in this poll. Both are more deserving than Mankins, McCourty and Wilfork.
Yeah, I'd replace Mankin$ & McCourty with Haynes & Morgan, keep Wilfork, and add Bruce Armstrong, who I wish could've stayed one more season to win a ring...great player, great man.

Seems to be a problem with Pats first-round LGs.

Randy Moss.

The Patriots could have drafted him but did not.

The also could have drafted Jerry Rice.

True, but Moss is still the correct answer to the poll question:

Actually, there was a question of whether Hannah or Jerry Sisemore of Texas was the best offensive lineman coming into the 1973 draft. The issue was settled for the Pats, though, as the Eagles, picking third, chose Sisemore. The Patriots, at four, went with Hannah. Sizemore had a long, productive career at Philly, making two Pro Bowls and second team All-Pro twice. But he was no John Hannah.

There are 3 different ways to interpret the question?

a.) who is the best player the Patriots drafted and while he was on the Patriots?
b.) who is the best player the Patriots drafted and had the best NFL career?
c.) who is the best first round pick that had the best NFL career but also played on the Patriots at some point?

answer a.) John Hannah
answer b.) John Hannah
answer c.) John Hannah

However Mike Haynes is the runner up for b.) and c.)

And it was obvious that a.) was the intended way to answer this question.

That is why, no matter the outcome, the lawyers always get paid.

Hannah was getting old by then. 13th year in the league at guard in an era in which OLs brutalized and mauled each other. Hannah was practically done already by the Super Bowl year, at 37 years of age.

Hannah with Law second because Law has the hardware over Haynes.

I'm gonna go with the guy who made key plays in all 3 of his SB wins that we probably don't win without. Hightower

I picked Hightower too for a different reason. He’s a player that you could fit in any system and he looks as comfortable, on the line, off the line, blitz, coverage, zone, man, etc. Also a coach on the field. Not to mention, super clutch. He is what I though Mayo was supposed to be.

Makes complete sense

I picked Seymour. He was such a force for a bunch of years, huge part of three rings, mentored Wilfork for a little while, a physical freak who was probably the best DL of his day, big and fast enough to play 4-3 DT and 3-4 DE, then got paid by another team and still dominated. 7x Pro Bowls and 5x All-Pros. All at a critical position. Really the best young defensive player they had during the first period of the dynasty

Hannah is an all timer but at a less important position. 10 All-Pros, 2 All-Decade teams, HOF. Led a record-setting rushing attack. Lotta hardware but no rings (though he was cheated out of a shot at one by Ben Dreith). You wonder if he could play now at 6-2, 265. That motor though. Hard to argue that he wasn’t the best Pats first-rounder of all time, but I just felt that Seymour was the critical part of something much bigger and better.
