Another interesting angle to this is whether the pick was obvious or not. Meaning, the poll here is really “who’s the best player on this list?” When the best PICK might be someone else.

So for example, we might agree Hannah is the best player (best offensive lineman ever, kind of hard to argue with) but if he was the obvious pick (I don’t know if he was) then another guy might be the better pick.

Yeah, I'd replace Mankin$ & McCourty with Haynes & Morgan, keep Wilfork, and add Bruce Armstrong, who I wish could've stayed one more season to win a ring...great player, great man.

Actually, there was a question of whether Hannah or Jerry Sisemore of Texas was the best offensive lineman coming into the 1973 draft. The issue was settled for the Pats, though, as the Eagles, picking third, chose Sisemore. The Patriots, at four, went with Hannah. Sizemore had a long, productive career at Philly, making two Pro Bowls and second team All-Pro twice. But he was no John Hannah.

Hannah was getting old by then. 13th year in the league at guard in an era in which OLs brutalized and mauled each other. Hannah was practically done already by the Super Bowl year, at 37 years of age.

I picked Hightower too for a different reason. He’s a player that you could fit in any system and he looks as comfortable, on the line, off the line, blitz, coverage, zone, man, etc. Also a coach on the field. Not to mention, super clutch. He is what I though Mayo was supposed to be.

I picked Seymour. He was such a force for a bunch of years, huge part of three rings, mentored Wilfork for a little while, a physical freak who was probably the best DL of his day, big and fast enough to play 4-3 DT and 3-4 DE, then got paid by another team and still dominated. 7x Pro Bowls and 5x All-Pros. All at a critical position. Really the best young defensive player they had during the first period of the dynasty

Hannah is an all timer but at a less important position. 10 All-Pros, 2 All-Decade teams, HOF. Led a record-setting rushing attack. Lotta hardware but no rings (though he was cheated out of a shot at one by Ben Dreith). You wonder if he could play now at 6-2, 265. That motor though. Hard to argue that he wasn’t the best Pats first-rounder of all time, but I just felt that Seymour was the critical part of something much bigger and better.
