Draft measurements during the Belichick regime (and assorted stats that may interest only me)

The more I dig into the WR class, the more I'm becoming enamored with the idea of adding Harry to this team if he makes it to 32. He has way better quickness than given credit for -- just look at what he does to Layne in this clip:

I'm also getting behind your idea of drafting A.J. Brown or N'Keal Harry, and Deebo, in the early rounds as dominant/physical receivers that can play in the slot or outside.

We really don't have a guy with that skillset in our WR corps right now.

OH. I'm dumb. I was staring at the headers for quite some time trying to associate the percentages to market share of catches or something, and then I finally realized it's where they lined up on the field. Duh. Thank you for this useful chart.

Receivers who I think look could fit

Boykins, Deebo, Campbell, Isabella...

Although Boykins at 6'3 is too tall for our usual he went to Notre Dame so...

Their draft history says otherwise. Look at the 40 times -- most are 4.3 or 4.4. Dobson was 6'3. They do care about size and speed in the early rounds.

Plus they traded for 6'4 Moss.

What about Tyron Johnson out of Oklahoma State? He is very athletic and has good size but was never consistent at OSU. Think he’d be a great back end of a double dip.

I just found out that N'Keal Harry returns punts. If he can handle that job for the Pats, that makes him even more attractive. We can save Edelman from some wear and tear that way.

So far it looks like Deebo and Harry are neck and neck on my list of fit for Pats receivers. The question is will they last long enough to be selected? Do the Pats trade back from 32 and take one of these guys early in round 2 or do they stand pat and 'reach' for 1 of them at #32?

Is Dulin this year’s Tyrell Williams? Small school guy that’s not getting a lot of attention with excellent athletic numbers (Williams has much better agility numbers than Dulin however).

Dulin's extra value is on special teams as a kick returner. If we don't get Harry or Deebo, I wouldn't be surprised at seeing the Pats grab Dulin with a mid to late pick just for his ST contributions.

Now the profile on Caleb Wilson is an eye opener. If we can't get Fant or Hockenson, I wouldn't be at all adverse to picking up Wilson with a late 2nd or early 3rd round pick. He can really fill that pass catching role and has played in a big time program at UCLA where the lights are pretty bright.

I was thinking at first, is Josh Rosen just making him look good? But the funny thing is that after Rosen left as a top pick in the draft, Wilson -improved- in the following season. He caught over 960 yards which is a UCLA record for tight ends. His development is on the upswing. And who would make him look better as a catcher of the football, than Tom Brady? At 6'4 240 and a 4.56 40 he also is one of the fastest tight ends available in this year's draft.

The article kept mentioning Jakobi as a "chains mover" and I think that is the best description for him. Jakobi shows great instincts on which routes to run, maybe since he's an ex-QB, and great body positioning which is a mismatch when he's covered by sub-6' slot corners.

He and Olabisi Johnson, from CSU, are big slot receivers which could provide a bigger catch radius for Brady; lower Edelman's slot routes and sometimes fill his role as a Z-receiver.

I like Meyers better than Olabisi more because he's taller and looks like a more natural, fluid catcher on the field even though Olabisi is a better athlete.

His style of play, and catches, actually resembles that of a bigger Danny Amendola, who thrived in this offense, and are similar athletically.

We need receivers who a) can get open, b) have good hands and c) are versatile.

I worry that Harry and Harmon can't separate regularly and have visions of Aaron Dobson. I think AJ Brown and Deebo Samuel fit all 3 requirements To a lesser extent I think Parris Campbell can do all 3 too but is much more of a projection but has ++ athleticism. They are my top 3 options at WR in the top 2 rounds.

I'd look at McLaurin, Ridley and Isabella in round 3.

Yep, the last 3 WRs the Patriots have drafted in the first 3 rounds -- Dobson, Price, and Jackson -- have all been over 6 feet tall.

I went back to Dobson's tape yesterday since he was the highest we've drafted a WR this decade, and I noticed that he stood out on fades, posts, slants, comebacks, contested catch situations, etc. Despite his reputation for drops here, he was quite sure handed in college, with numerous acrobatic leaps and grabs. His role with the Patriots, at least during his rookie year, was quite similar. Perhaps that could give us some insight into what the Patriots want from an X? While perhaps not on the same level, it wasn't different from Gordon's role.

The question for this draft class: who shows that body type / testing / skill set?

I think McLaurin goes much higher than that. Top 50 pick.
