The ref is trying to decide whether to call the foul here, as the Auburn player grabs the UVa ballhandler, in a deliberate attempt to foul (which they'd been doing and clearly wanted to do again.)

Maybe there was a reason he dribbled off his foot (a snapshot of the action just prior to that dribble):

Then call the foul. That still doesn't excuse the missed double dribble call. This crew, for both teams, was really inconsistent. There were some obvious hacks they missed and then some other not as bad they called. That foul at the end was minor compared to a bunch of no calls they had tonight.

I have no skin in this game. The only team in the final 4 I didn't want to see win was Michigan State and even that was only because they've won it before.

Basketball officials often let calls go if they are the direct result of another call they didn't make, like in this one. Just like holding and PI in football, if every call were made, the game would slow to a snail's pace. Either side of this situation can be argued, of course, but what happened in that situation isn't unusual in basketball.

Karma is a *****. No tears in watching Bruce Pearl lose. When Pearl lost recruiting Dylan Thomas (U of Illinois), Pearl taped a conversation on the phone with the recruit. When Thomas was asked about forgiving Pearl in a 2005 interview, he was quoted as saying, "It's hard to forgive a snake."

The double-dribble is utterly clear in the replay. Although the defender is attempting to foul Jerome, he fails to do anything more than graze his uniform, and this only after Jerome has re-possessed the ball.

No foul is committed until after the double-dribble. If this is sometimes not caught,what about the final foul call which had no effect on the shot. That is almost invariably let go in final plays of games. The refs don't decide games in the final seconds (here less than a second) unless it's really decisive. This is why Pearl went bonkers before calming down.

Yeah but that was also a double dribble before that. Should have been a turnover. That’s where Auburn got screwed. The foul on the 3 was definitely a foul but it should have never come to that.

Nobody noticed anything until someone stared at it for awhile......

Why don’t we go through entire games and count all the bad calls / no calls????

I saw Bruce Pearl interviewed after the game. I agree with other people that he has a dubious history, but the first question they asked him was about the bad calls. He said they had 40 minutes to win and had other missed opportunities, and refused to blame the refs for the loss.

I thought that was classy and all of sports can learn from that. Every team loves to blame the refs when they lose, including us, and I always think that's a dumb excuse. Look how much the Saints harped on it (and still do, leading to a very questionable rule change) despite all the other mistakes they made in the NFC final.

It would be better if more people could just take a loss like a man and own it instead of blaming someone else.

He didn't just graze his uniform. The defender tugged at Jerome's jersey almost simultaneous with the ball hitting the back of his foot.
