Bring out the mock draft busts!

I'll present Chad Reuter's first three-rounder for NFL.com:

32 CB Byron Murphy, Washington: The Patriots address cornerback with Jason McCourty and Eric Rowe due to become free agents this offseason.
56 TE Alize Mack, Notre Dame: Mack would go higher in most years, but the depth in this TE group makes him a steal here.
64 EDGE Chase Winovich, Michigan: A versatile, hard-nosed defender -- just as the Patriots like.
73 QB Ryan Finley, NCSU: Finley's efficiency could make him a nice fit behind Tom Brady for the next couple of years -- or more.

Hmmm . . . somehow DT and TE are less of an issue than CB?!?!?!

Yikes. I'd dislike that draft.

Murphy is very good, though.

This is awful. I'd take Murphy in a heartbeat but w our success getting guys udfa I wonder how what type of player the prospect would have to be.

Would have loved to see Jaire/Wynn on the board last year to see where we go. Id lean OL still

First 4 guys could be top 40-50 picks but yea sure that's realistic.

Bucky Brooks is spreading it thick. In his first draft, he had the Pats taking Kyler Murray at 32 (at least he didn't have them trading up . . .).

Now this:

32. Rock Ya-Sin - CB

Belichick loves hard-nosed players with versatile skills. Ya-Sin is a natural cover corner with the speed, quickness and instincts to slide inside as a nickel corner in sub-packages.

Because this defense would benefit so much from another cornerback. . . .

All depends on free agency for me. If Jason isn't re-signed, and Jones moves on, we'd have to rely on Dawson and Crossen taking the next step. While not a first round need for me, I do expect a corner in the draft.

Jones is an RFA who played nearly every down in SB53. I would be shocked if the Pats let him walk. I'd say he's worth the second-round tender.

That's what I hope happens. But until it does, we probably should expect us to add a corner. And even then, prepping for the future isn't a bad idea.

You can never have enough quality corners in the nfl. I like sin, but not in the first round!

I heard Brooks on the radio the other day say his mock draft is what he thinks teams will do not what they should do. He said if he was making picks for the teams it would be totally different but he looks at it as how each team evaluates players and value and bases his mock off that.

Can you imagine? Drools.

That arguably makes it even worse.

2019 NFL Mock Draft: Matt Miller's Post-Combine Predictions

The Pick: Trayvon Mullen, CB, Clemson

The New England Patriots could go a number of different directions at the end of the first round. With Rob Gronkowski's future up in the air, they may eye Alabama tight end Irv Smith. If Trey Flowers leaves in free agency, pass-rusher will be a need. But head coach Bill Belichick loves defensive backs, and the Patriots have to get younger at cornerback.

Two-round 2019 NFL Mock Draft: Bengals grab Dwayne Haskins at No. 11, Giants wait until Round 2 to find QB

32. Jeffery Simmons, DT, Mississippi State
Same as last week. Simmons is a top-5 talent. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in February, which means he won't be healthy until midway through the season, best case. But the Patriots can wait and they'll take a first-round flier on Simmons, who could be ready to go in time for another Super Bowl run.

56. Julian Love, CB, Notre Dame
An undersized-but-physical cornerback who had 39 passes defended the last two seasons for the Fighting Irish.

64. Jaylon Ferguson, EDGE, Louisiana Tech
Ferguson had 17.5 sacks last season and 45 in his college career. He shows good quickness for his size but questions about his flexibility see him fall to Day 2.

This isn't quite jump-off-the-Tobin bad, but I'd rather see them trade out of the first two rounds altogether than end up with this.

Curious why you say that. Three pretty good players. Love reminds me a ton of Logan Ryan, and Simmons could be our best overall DL after a year to recover.

I would prefer to see the Pats get players who could contribute more this year.

I agree. Just depends how draft day goes. If Simmons is by far the best on the board and Patriots think he has All-Pro potential you take him. If there are comparable options that help in 2019 take them.

I personally think Simmons is the 2nd best interior defensive lineman in this draft so getting him even with a redshirt would be great imo.

Yikes. I'd dislike that draft.

Murphy is very good, though.

What do you think about Murphy at FS? Seems like a better maximization of his talents.

I could compare him to someone like Jordan Poyer.

Interesting. I'll have to think about that. He's pretty capable (and valuable) as a corner. I'll get back to you tomorrow after I've gone over his games again and given it some thought.
