Strategy theory 2020

lot of good points raised gentlemen. My biggest worry is the coach turnover rather than the players leaving. flowers replaced by bennett and brown by whoever. Its that core of coaches that left for pastures new.

I don’t worry about the coaching because Belichick can step in and run that with a little help, McDaniels will be fine with a few more pieces, and Scar always comes through with the OL. All the information is already there so it doesn’t worry me in the least. They do, however, need to keep building the front 7 on defense, and add several good receiving options. They have plenty of time, picks, and money to get all of it done and ready to go for the season.

Been thinking and Iv come up with a realistic scenario.

Bill knows that after all the upheaval and players leaving that 2019 will be very hard. I think he, and brady to some extent, have marked 2019 as a rebuild year. With the Draft picks we have and the fact that there are no major contracts up next year I think they have set their target on the 2020 season.

Gronk will sit out this year to recover his body and recharge as there is no point in him taking damage during a down year. And I think he comes back for the 2020 season all guns blazing.

What do you think guys

Though everyone else seems to tar and feathering you, I think your post is actually pretty darn reasonable. Let's put it this way: if Dee Ford had stayed onsides, your post would be one of many along these lines.

Last offseason, many of us felt this team was headed for a rebuild, much like 2009-10 because there are so many aging veterans and a lack of young, up and coming players. While it was nice to see some new faces emerge (Michel, Jackson), this is still a team built on veterans who are closer to the end than the beginning.

It was so shocking that they won a Super Bowl that people ware riding a wave still, which is hard not to because of their sheer awesomeness of this run. But prior to that (I'd say from the offseason through the beginning of the postseason) the idea of the Patriots needing to prepare to move on quickly from a lot of players was the prevailing through here. If you look at the Patriots from 2008-10, the following players were moved or retired: Vrabel, Bruschi, Seau, Seymour, Warren, Harrison, Brown, Moss, Light, and Izzo. That 07 team was absolute peak form, so many were surprised at how close they were to cooked in many ways.

Not so sure about the Gronk take, though. But I do think that just because this team won the SB, that doesn't mean the Patriots view themselves as wise to keep the status quo and may be a lot more aggressive than people thing in terms of shaking up the roster and going younger, even if it may be a year or two of growing pains.

And this doesn't mean waving the white surrender flag and taking a season or two. They'll still be competitive. It just may be about moves that value youth and draft picks (unknown) over proven commodities with a shorter window and lower ceiling right now.

We can’t afford another 2009 transition year. Brady ain’t 32 anymore.

We can’t expect a massive turnaround like that. If it was just a one year deal like 2009 where the roster clearly is in rebuilding mode, and then back to 14-2 in year, that would be quite an amazing opportunity, even if Brady is 41/42. The problem is the late 2000s turnaround cannot be expected to happen in a lightning flash like that again. In a terrible (I mean really putrid) 2009 draft, they remarkably came away with Chung and Edelman. In 2010 they drafted Gronkowski, McCourty, Spikes, and Hernandez. In 2011, Solder, Cannon, Vereen, and Ridley. 2012 was Hightower and Jones. That’s a lot of huge hits.

2018 could be the start of a nice run in the draft. Michel and Jackson are hits and Wynn and Bentley could very well be if they're healthy. If we get a similar haul this year (let's say starting caliber WR, TE, edge rusher) and then consider us "rebuilt".

Maybe I am disconnected, but I think we have a shot at another super bowl in 2019.

1.) our defense really came together nicely and while we lost flowers, we are getting Bentley back, plus we get to see what Dawson and Sam can do.

2.) on offense, we appear to have been decimated by departures, but a closer look reveals some holes are already filled:

Wynn takes over for brown.
Izzo takes over for Allen.
Berries could replace Patterson as a return guy.

Plus we have 12 picks!

Yes we need a tight end, some receivers and a kicker. But we have a good chunk of cap space to make that happen,

Now our only goal in 2020 should be to go 0 and 16 in order to have the first pick in the draft so we can take Qb Lawrence from Clemson!

Most important 2 things for success are coverage ability and QB. We have that both. We will be very good in 2019.

We are not the 2011 Colts. We will be fine. We have so many picks and so much can happen especially during the draft. We where in the same spot last year with no LT and a Defense full of holes. Also we have won without Gronk and we never have WRs.

I would love if your first 4 picks fell like that, but I think each will be gone before that draft position.

LOL might as well hand us the Lombardi.

The defense is in fine shape. Another couple of DL's will be added.

There is no reason to fret about the offense until after the trade deadline. However, we do need a lot: 2 OT's, 2 WR's, and 2 TE's.

.

The offense does look worrisome today. Allen and Gronk will be missed in the run game. Love Edelman, but at his age, position, size and history relying on him to make it through the season without injury given the load he is likely to carry is a long bet.

The good news is the offensive coaching staff looks strong and somehow BB and team always pulls it together. Not going to fret in March.

Well, they might as well hand us a spot in the playoffs, and a very, very likely division win.
We are strongly favored to be in the AFC Championship Game year again. After that, lots can happen, as always.

bot Belichick and Josh are still here.

Pats would literally have to try to lose the AFC East this coming season

Lets ignore the last 5 seasons. Where we went to 4 SBs, and missed a 5th due to a missed XP .

Way back in 2013. Where we lost the AFCCG 26-16(in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicates).

At this point I would say our defense is clearly better than 2013. Even our offense is better than what we fielded in the AFCCG. Ignoring Vereen's 5 catches our top pass catchers in that game were: Edelman(duh), Austin Collie , one-footed Dobson, Hooma-whatever, and Matthew Mulligan(1 catch!). Danny "playoff" Amendola laid a big goose egg.

And if Amendola catches the ball in Miami for the late TD, then that game is in Foxboro, and maybe the Patriots get sacrificed to the Seahawks instead of the Broncos .
