Greg Schiano Steps Down From DC Position

Huge loss, I don’t know how they will be able to replace his contributions to their success.

Wouldn't be surprised if Mayo became the de facto DC. He has the IQ and the passion. His nickname was "Bill jr."

It is more likely that some of the people on the board get their wish and will see a season of BB as DC. You can't just make Mayo in his first season a DC without knowing how he responds as a coach in high pressure situations, if he can even handle calling plays in real time when all kinds of things are moving and while he is still learning about the job.

Personally I don't like taking BB away from running the big picture during games. But it is what it is.

No its just people slinging **** TMZ style without thinking for a second. None of his resignation will be related at all to BB, players or the organization but to whatever happened to him (or his family) in their private life.

As for Bennett I am sure BB didn't even bring it up to Schiano. It is understood that nothing that was said or happened before matters. All that matters is what happens in the locker room, practice field and match days. Ignore the noise.
No. A career football coach who accepts a great coaching opportunity is going to quit because the team signed a player who says something mean about him once.
Don’t you understand this isn’t grown men with high paid jobs and huge responsibility, it’s 19 year old girls on social media.

Really people disagree with this.

How can this even come close to the worst postseason ever?

* We had coaches leave. This happens often and is the price of success.
* We had a player retire. Sucks but I hear that has also happened.
* We had some players leave. This happens EVERY SEASON for us. Because our system finds and produces a lot of players who can excel at a role.
* We had a coach come in and then quit. This is unusual but since he's been here all of like 1 1/2 months I'm going to go out on a limb and say we'll recover.
* Our owner got a handy in a massage parlor doesn't even register as good or bad news. It's just hilarious to me.

Meanwhile...
* We didn't have a player ****ing killing people.
* We didn't have a player get railroaded by a corrupt NFL head office with blinders on regarding the science.
* We didn't lose the Super Bowl to Eli Manning or Nick Foles.

This offseason hasn't been fun, so far, but it's not a disaster (the team had to know what was likely coming down the pike as far as player and coach defections save for Schiano)

Hence the words de facto.

Here's the bright side: We're super lucky to have McDaniels again this year because Belichick is almost certainly going to have to take a heavy role on the D side of things and I certainly trust McDaniels to find ways for us to score points. And we still have Dante who will do as good a job as anyone in the history of this league as far as making up for our loss of a LT.

I will confess...

He is allergic to me...

There is no hence. Mayo running the LBs is already a big leap of faith. I see no realistic scenario in which a first year coach gets to be even a fake DC or a figure head. Hell, listen to what Flores said last year about how much more work being DC is than he realized. And he had years of experience climbing up the ladder.

Mayo has none of this yet. Playing football is not the same as teaching football. Especially not at a professional level. Next year if he proves a quick learner ? Who knows..

We will most likely go into the season again without a DC and BB will take over playcalling on defense. I can't think of anyone else they could bring in at this point. Schiano was kinda the emergency option.

I agree, right now that it appears that they don’t have anyone who could take over as DC. Belichick will most likely have to run it himself, Caserio could take some of the load off of Belichick by doing even more of the GM and personal work.

Honestly I am not sure there will be a big difference in the offseason / preseason. The biggest loss with BB taking over playcalling on defense is just the loss of his two eyes when it comes to big picture decisions.

It will be another pretty big season for McDaniels. He might fly even more solo than ever before. Either that or we might get our dream of Ernie taking things over :D

Oh, I don't think that's quite fair. Imagine if the Cowboys, or Raiders, or a NY team had been to 4 out of 5 and won 3. THAT would have been a full on harvesting of the news cycle. Belichick's podium behavior, and the lack of celebrity behavior by the players, actually keeps it well below what it could be.
Fair has nothing to do with it.

It's a fact of life that s**t always happens to the Patriots.

We can sit here all day and list the reasons (celebrity, winning, personalities, NFL jealousy, etc) but it happens.

Pepper Johnson for Defensive Coordinator

He has a half dozen NFL rings as a player and coach.

Well that was quick...o_O

Like I said, he has the IQ and the passion to hit the ground running.

I can think of nobody else in as good a position, right now. Nobody with remotely the degree of familiarity and respect that Mayo has in our system.

Mayo's official position will be the LB coach but IMO, he'll immediately be groomed for the DC role, and if he keeps checking off all the right boxes, he'll acquire more and more responsibilities as the season goes on.

I'm not crushed to be honest. I was iffy about his hiring to begin with.
