Manziel cut and no longer welcome in CFL

Never forget Manziel & Crackenberg were actual 1st & 2nd round NFL picks.

Eh, not comparable. Manziel actually had talent. He was always going to be a 1st round pick, and would hsve certainly been a top-5 pick if not for his cavalcade of issues. Manziel, like Gordon, is disappointing because he's a clear case of wasted talent. That man could scramble, stop on the dime, plant his feet perfectly, and with perfect mechanics whip a 50 yard accurate throw downfield. Big difference between Gordon and Manziel is that, while both were ruined by the environments they grew up in, I'm much more sympathetic to Gordon. For one, he wasn't a spoiled rotten brat like Manziel, and second he's never hurt anybody but himself.

Hackenberg, on the other hand, was terrible and anyone besides the Jets could have predicted him as a failure.

Everyone's assuming drugs or booze and that's the occam's razor explanation, but it's also possible he had a non-compete clause in his contract and violated it by openly discussing an interest in playing in the AAF last week. It would seem overly harsh to force the Alouettes to cut him and then ban him from the league for such a thing though.

Have to disagree about Manziel, I never saw a real QB. Just a guy that was a master at faking it until he made it. He was talented but I just didn't see a franchise QB.

All of his troubles are self-inflicted wounds.

Johnny is running with Josh Gordon.

He missed meetings - it was an out clause.

"Johnny Manziel's camp has been in contact with Alliance of American Football officials about the possibility of joining the league, AAF chairman Tom Dundon told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday.

Dundon said the league and Manziel's camp have been in touch in the 24 hours after the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner was barred from the Canadian Football League, and the AAF has offered him the opportunity to work out for its teams.

The San Antonio Commanders own Manziel's rights under the league's college allocation system, but personnel from all eight AAF teams would be invited to the potential workout, Dundon said."

How long before there's a "Johnny Football is availiable" thread?

He had his rights dropped by San Antonio and picked up by Memphis, who just lost Zach Mettenberger to a leg injury. Former Patriot Devin Lucien is on the team

Head coach of Memphis is Mike Singletary. Is this a form of boot camp or rehab for Johnny? Lol

Lends some credence to the speculation that Manziel's offense that got him banned from the CFL wasn't related to conduct but rather a breach of a non-compete clause in his contract. The CFL likely made him sign a clause that said he couldn't negotiate with teams in any other league for X years (to keep him from fleeing to the NFL at the first opportunity) and he violated that by stating he was interested in the AAF.

The CFL would want to be harsh as an example here because I think AAF salaries are competitive with theirs and they probably don't want players using the threat of leaving to a comparable pro league as leverage. When it was only the NFL (where only a handful of CFL players would gey a sniff) or the Arena League (which pays much worse than the CFL), it didn't matter as much, but now you have a potential competitor to the CFL. If it's true, it would be interesting as a sign of how seriously the CFL is taking the AAF.
