ROCHESTER, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Dallas Cowboys may be a few years from their last Super Bowl, but they are the favorite football team among adults who follow professional football, rising one spot since last year. Since this survey began in 1998, the Cowboys have always been in one of the top four positions, usually in the top two. The Indianapolis Colts have continued their steady rise in the rankings and move up one spot, from No. 3 last year to No 2 this year. In 1999, the Colts were tied for No. 27 and have moved up each year since. Rounding out the top five are the Pittsburgh Steelers (No. 3, dropping from No. 1 last year), the Green Bay Packers (remaining at No. 4) and the Chicago Bears (No. 5, moving up one spot).

We're down from #3 in 2004-2005.

IMO there are only two national franchises, Dallas and Pittsburgh. Everyone else fluctuates depending on year to year success.

Good, all the more people to watch us beatdown those teams

I seem to remember the Cowboys being hated when they were winning in the 90s although I wasn't around when the Steelers were dominant so I can't attest to that. Anyone know of any surveys taken during their dynasties?

Dallas was certainly #1 during their dynasties. They were (and are) America's Team. Curiously, it was the Raiders was the only other team that caught the heart of America. The patriots were starting to get there. But I think Belichick and certainly fans prefer to be disliked.

If anyone noticed, the poll was conducted the week of "cameragate"!!!!!

I'd rather be unpopular - nobody was rooting for the Pats when I started watching them anyways.

for some reason, the Pats have become one of those "love to root against" teams.

The only team in the top 5 I can tolerate is Green Bay.

The standout on that list is Baltimore. They haven't been pushovers the last decade, they have marquee players yet they can't even crack the top 25. Baltimore seems to be in an NFL fan's black hole. I know the Pats sure as hell don't know anything about Baltimore - they haven't traveled there in 11 years.

The Cowboys, Steelers, and Packers are so popular because of their great success early in the Super Bowl/TV era. Many people were raised on these teams throughout the country. The only ironic thing is that it didn't translate to the 49ers. Then again, their success was later than the other three.

Indy's popularity is because of their offense. Most fans love offense. Manning being everywhere doesn't hurt their popularity.

I'd like to see the regional and city breakdown as this looks to be outside of cities where there are strong NFL franchises, as Dallas certainly isn't a favorite in Philadelphia or Washington.

I'm not surprised at Indy's rise, as there are a lot of states and cities "between the coasts" where there aren't NFL franchises and where Indy and Peyton's down home schtick would plaly well.

I agree with the poster who obersved that Dallas and Pittsburgh are probably the only consistent "national" franchises. Even the '49ers didn't rise to this in their glory years.

I'm actually surprised that the Pats are still #6 after not winning the SB for two years. Let's face it, we're an east coast franchise from a very blue state and were no doubt as high as #3 because everybody loves a winner and will probably never be a big favorite between the coasts. I'd be interested, though, to see what happens if Brady and Belichick get numbers four and five in the next three or four years.

If people only knew the truth behind the Colts' shoddy, shady franchise, sick ownership, evil GM and Martin Luther Dungy's weird emotional illness, they'd be much further down the list.

seems like you're the only one who knows this "truth"

No, you also know the truth but are afraid to admit as much. In other words, YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

I think this on going cheat accusation will make the Patriots win SB this year. Why? Because that will make players mad...and when they aare mad they'll play harder to prove them wrong that they don't need to cheat to win Super bowl.

The Pats now play the roll of the heel! Like when Hulk Hogan turned into Hollywood Hulk Hogan and the NWO. I like the Pats in the heel roll! So lets flip off the rest of the league and tell them to schedule their beatings!!!!!!!

By the way if you're looking for the most wholesome, Christian team, it ain't the Colts - it's the LIONS!

You've been Evangelical-served!
