Wow.

Widely accepted fact the 1989 Niners were one of the best teams of all-time. Their opponents were the Vikings (10-6), LA Rams (11-5), and Broncos (11-5.). Patriots opponents arguably quite a bit better in Chargers (12-4), Chiefs (12-4), and LA Rams (13-3).

Like many, I’ve always felt points allowed is the number 1 priority to measure a defense. But when you can combine that with yards allowed and points, your defense can become historic.

Agreed. I don’t think you’ll find many people saying this was the most dominant overall run since the 1989 Niners, but that stat is amazing nonetheless. Going into the postseason, this was supposed to be one of the weakest Patriots teams in the last decade.

Yeah, wasn’t totally blindsided by the run, but when they lost 2 games in December which was so uncharacteristic of this team, you would think as a fan, some lingering doubt was there.

Just in awe how they put it all together and just pretty much manhandled their way to the Lombardi. Incredible to experience watching it unfold as a fan.

The Rams only scored 3 points against the 49ers in the conf championship that year, coincidentally.

Both the 1989 Jets and the 2018 Jets were beaten/swept by the Niners and Patriots title teams, and they both finished 4-12! That one is a shocker.

I hope people are not comparing the two teams.

That 49ers team was hell on wheels.

This is how Coach handles the QB transition. We've seen it before. Brady managed to not lose games while defense held off opponents. As the Brady era ends, Coach will build a strong running game and defense to take pressure off the QB position. This will allow TB to play longer and give his replacement a strong start.

Yeah, those three years, 1988, 1989 and 1990 were absolutely dominant by the 49ers. I think people forgot how good the 49ers were in the 80's and 90's. Very similar to this Pats era.

49ers had a shot to go to 3 straight SB’s, but lost to a Giants team (for the 3rd straight time in the playoffs) with a backup QB (Hostetler). Montana was knocked out of the game on a brutal hit by Leonard Marshall, Roger Craig fumbled late and the Giants won 15-13 on a game-ending FG. Montana was never really the same after that.

I was thinking about that today when reflecting on the Patriots. Although the Patriots were never in the actual mix for three straight (except for 2005), you could argue this latest run is the closest any team has come. Had they won in 2015 or 2917, that's three straight, although it's more theoretical since you don't know how things may have changed by the butterfly effect. Still though, in 2015 they were badly derailed by injuries and still were a missed extra point away from taking Denver to OT; in 2017, they led in the fourth quarter in the Super Bowl, and that was without both Edelman and Hightower.

Guarantee Brady will still be the Patriots starting QB in 2917. ;)

HOWEVER the rules are so different today. Especially the salary cap.
Sure but I'm talking about the talent on that team compared to the one 2018
