Gary Myers: Tom Brady “genuine”, Peyton Manning “uncooperative, control freak”

I'm sure Manning is an ass, but if someone came up to me *right* after losing the superbowl and asked if I was embarrassed, I probably would have hit him. It's one thing for a player to be asked how they feel and to say say they felt embarrassed, it's another thing to ask them if they felt embarrassed (implying that they should). For a person who makes a living as a writer to not be able to make the distinction speaks a lot about Myers.

That comes with the territory of being a megastar professional athlete. This very same writer probably stuck his nose up Manning’s naked rectum (intentional reference) at least five times prior to personally assure his MVP awards. That’s not that bad a question. Manning is a media darling, except when the media doesn’t fellate him and throw the team under the bus when he chokes time after time.

I was watching the highlights of the Saints-Colts Super Bowl the other night; Manning’s lack of poise, leadership, and team buy-in was really on another level. This is a guy who would overrule his coaches and go for it on 4th down (and then he tried it in the playoffs and embarrassed himself.) I just can’t stand this guy for so many reasons, since he was always presented as a knight in shining armor. There have been tons of other players that have been rivals to my team, causing some heartbreaking losses, but I don’t feel the need to trash them like I do with Manning, Dungy, and Polian, the trinity of hypocritical jackassery who played the press better than the game of football.

A 6th round draft pick who didn't even get to be the clear starter in college who worked his ass off.

Peyton Manning was a pampered, entitled silver spoon princeling, which is why he wilted in the face of adversity over and over again. He was a frontrunner and a bully who went out like a ***** the second he got punched in the nose. He had talent, but no character, and he showed it over and over again.

Even his successes were tainted. His first Super Bowl run he tried to choke away multiple games with brutally stupid interceptions and was carried by a Colts defense that blew up the second Bob Sanders came back. He last Super Bowl run he put in a sub-Dilfer effort and was just dragged across the finish line by an elite roster so he could shill for Budweiser in maybe the most unearned moment of triumph in NFL history.

All his all-time regular season records are already crumbling, but his all-time playoff loser mark might stand forever. He was a sex offender who used his wife as an HGH drug mule, simultaneously dodging USADA and #metoo in the nick of time like Neo in The Matrix, but at least he was funny in those commercials.

I’ve been reading and hearing a lot of Tom Brady personal perspectives from his current & former teammates this week and they’re all positive.

He seems to have remained unchanged since his rookie year. He does things that endear him to these guys in a way that is caring and loving.

Almost like that general in the movie “White Christmas”. I find it amazing and impressive.

I know most of us are men, but if you’re honest, you have to admit there are men we look up to with love. But we call it a “man-crush” so we don’t expose ourselves as unmanly.

Besides my dad, I’ve had and have men like that in my life. And admitting that actually makes me feel more like a man.

I think BB is genuine and the real deal. I think Saban is a poser hard as$ who is benefiting greatly off Bear Bryant, Alabama legacy, and a few good seasons. He is letting his money work for him at this point. The best thing Saban does is discipline his uber talent. He is a grossly overrated coach. His jerk attitude towards college media is not comparable to BB's withdrawn, don't give an inch, mostly passive attitude to the NFL bloodsuckers.

I’m not sure where this is coming from. He was good at Michigan State and LSU as well. I don’t know the guy, but I haven’t heard disparaging things about him. He’s finally got his culture in place. Once you have that at a place like Alabama you will always be in the mix at the end.

I am not ashamed to say Tom Brady is one of the most influential people in my life. The way he carries himself, treats others, stays humble, and remains deeply motivated by his craft (not the celebrity trappings that come with it) are qualities that should be admired.

Every former player loves this guy. I saw an article on TMZ where Asante Samuel was pumping up Brady while going into a strip club. Aaron Hernandez was rooting for him in prison. Randy Moss loves him. Even guys who leave the Patriots on bad terms are straight up Tom Brady fanboys. This could not be more opposite of a guy like Michael Jordan and a lot of great athletes.

Somewhat OT - I preface this question by stating Archie Manning's NFL career largely ended before I was born (I was 1 when he finished up with the Vikings), so I never got to "see him play".

Why is Archie Manning considered NFL royalty (or CFB royalty for that matter)? His stats in both portions of his career are fairly unremarkable. I would say is he is the Bubbah version of Tim Tebow, but at least Tebow won regularly at UF and is widely considered one of the best CFB players ever, even if his talents didn't translate to NFL success.

I think a part of the hero worship for Manning - and for the whole Manning family - comes from their southern roots. The elder Manning grew up in modest circumstances in Mississippi and played for Ole Miss. His professional career was mostly in New Orleans. Peyton and Eli were raised in Dixie and both played at southern schools, Tennessee and Mississippi, respectively. Southerners tend to be loyal to their own, so I don't think there is anything that Peyton could do that would alienate that fan base.

Archie was a bigger deal in college than Peyton. And Southerners worship college FB.

He was a bigger deal in college because he seemingly gave it his all on teams that largely sucked. Even compared to his contemporaries (thus adjusting for the era he played) his stats still were pretty mediocre; with the INT numbers approaching bad.

Every story I have seemingly ever heard about Archie is "if he had only had talent at [pick your position group] around him, what he coulda done"...not exactly a great piece of praise.

And yes, I get that Southerners worship CFB; to your point my native neighbors talk 10:1 about HS/CFB compared to the NFL.

But really....he's the guy? Peyton's dad?

I have seen him berate a former NFL head coach(Kiffin) in a 52-7 smashing, just to exert dominance like a coward. Grandstanding at its finest. Also, I've seen him boil over and take out his frustration with the media on a lovely young lady. If I were so lucky I would run through a brick wall for BB, or a disciplinarian like coughlin..Saban..I would be repulsed to play for him. People find it convienient to compare the 2, I have always picked up on the subtle, yet key differences in character.

Listen at the end of the day I'm sure he's a decent man, and people obviously respect him. Not my cup of tea.

Peyton was initially a big deal because he was Archie’s son. Then he dissed Ole Miss, alienating that fan base. Peyton was popular at UT, but never the cult hero that Archie was. Sure he was a better player, but the love was for Archie. Still is. Played after his dad killed himself, played with a broken wrist vs LSU ... on and on.
