There are better teams this season than the Pats. Thats just the reality of the situation.
Chiefs vs Bears are my Super Bowl picks.
The Pats need to get back to the drawing board and figure this out. Quit messing with Bradys chemistry with his WRs. I believe that having Almendola back would make a huge difference and so would Deon Lewis.
I struggle with this thought process a lot. We know that the business model for the Pats is to not fall in love with players, unless they are named Tom Brady. Danny has 52 receptions and 509 yards and one lone TD with a 6m cap hit. Last year, he had 61/659/2 TDs, while being an absolute unit in the playoffs. But he's 33, and the business model says they don't pay WRs post 32 who's stat line puts him between Gordon and Hogan for production. So, do you want to throw the business model out because you liked DA? I did too, but their business model has kept them in the Super bowl hunt for 18 years. It's frustrating, to be sure, but their system works.
Check this out:
Chris Hogan, 30 yrsd old, 29 catches/468 yards/3 Tds
Cordarrell Patterson, 27 yrs old, 20 catches/244 yards/3 Tds
Together, they have a cap of 6.4m, with similar production to DA, with more Tds. Add to that the advantage of youth and Patterson's 21 KRs for 633 yards and a TD, and they have more production. DA has not returned a kick this year, while only returning 7 punts. This doesn't account for Patterson's ability to fill in at RB. Certainly, an argument can be made that he was running the ball out of necessity. but that's part of the full package he brings. No one thought that would lose Hill, Michel, and Burkhead all at once. Do you think DA would've been an option at RB? Me either.
I agree with you that Lewis is a big hole, but James White has more than picked up the slack in production, as has Sony Michel. Together, they have more production and less cap money than Lewis.
White: 82 attempts/ 354 rushing yards/4 Tds, receiving: 81/699/6 Td's. Dude should be a pro bowler. 2.4m cap
Michel: 177/765/5 Tds. Pretty much a non factor in the passing game, 1.7m cap
Lewis: 155/512/1 TD, 53/357/1 Td receiving. 4.3 cap
So, together, the cap hit is about the same, and they have a lot more production. The Pats system, while terribly frustrating, works. It would be nice to have these guys hang around forever and let us enjoy their whole career, but the cap is a real thing and that enters into it. The Patriots, more than any other team, are masters of it, and they have managed to stay on top longer than anyone else.
You want to assign blame for them not locking up the 2 or 1 seed by now? Blame TB for bailing out too soon on plays and Gronk for getting old overnight. Hindsight shows that the front office was right to want to deal Gronk with a little tread on the tires. I'll be shocked if he's here next year.
