Thoughts on QB prospect sitting out college bowl game?

Any college player with a high draftable grade who plays a non-playoff bowl game is a chump. Look at Jaylen Smith, Jake Butt, or Todd Gurley (not a bowl game but close enough). Imagine if you had to take one final test at the end of college, even though you already had a very cushy job lined up and your employer doesn't care about the test at all, but also there's a not negligible chance that taking this test will leave you unable to do the job you have lined up.

I swear 25% of this fan base wants a shiny new QB just because they are board.

Didn't say I wanted him (I don't, WV QBs suck), just saying it's possible.

On any given play you might get hurt. Its football.

Would Brady sit out? No he would not and you know damn well that he even hates to come out of a meaningless late season game or a game where NE is up by 21. Its about winning. Some the best players in the NFL are on some crappy college team in the boondocks, but they give all whistle to whistle. If you ever watched old Charger games Jr Seau and Rodney Harrison were the team despite losing year after year. Moss and Troy Brown went to Marshall.

Good luck to the NFL team that drafts this Primadonna. Let him enjoy his look at me 10 minutes of fame.

Brady would need the game to have something on tape.
He was a 6th round pick.

And at least he'll get 10 minutes of fame, because he's not going to blow out his knee in a completely meaningless exhibition game.

After you listen to Mike Mayock build these guys up youre ready trade all your draft picks to get him.

Ditka style.

This guy is a WV QB.

Would not NFL scouts be at this bowl game to get a last look at live competition that actually means something the other guys on the football team?

Tom Brady has sat out many meaningless games in his career. Hell, there have been entire preseasons he didn't even see the field. Bowl games are effectively preseason games; they're entirely meaningless, even for individual awards. He also, you know, wouldn't get paid if he refused to play a regular season game. I don't know if you know this, but college players don't get paid.

I'm surprised at those defending a college QUARTERBACK abandoning his team before a bowl game -- whatever bowl game -- to protect his NFL draft status. If anything, it represents a red flag to NFL teams regarding his dedication to TEAM and competitiveness as a leader. "Business decision" my ass. Makes me wonder what other potentially selfish "business decisions" will hold sway once he becomes a pro (if he truly is lucky enough to make a roster).

Only stupid NFL players treat it as anything other than a business. They're at-will employees and their employers have no loyalty to them. I know the idea that these are people who have an existence beyond the three hours they're on our television screens is foreign to some of you, whose careers usually last no more than a few short years, but come on.

I also guarantee their teammates don't give a crap, because they're also unpaid athletes playing in a meaningless game. Usually their teammates cheer their decision on. WVU's starting tackle is also sitting out the game.

The player who started this trend was Christian McCaffrey. You think the Panthers are wringing their hands about drafting him? Have you heard a peep about McCaffrey as prima donna in the NFL? No, he made a smart business decision because he's seen how this whole thing works over his entire life.

Regardless of that, football at any level remains an inherently TEAM sport and we're talking about a quarterback here. What he's doing contradicts the very nature of what he purports to be -- a TEAM leader. It's an outrageously selfish decision and tells a lot about his character.

Not a single one of his teammates has made any sort of hay or grumbled about his decision. And these are college kids, they tweet about everything. When Derwin James, Leonard Fournette, and Christian McCaffrey skipped bowl games, their teammates supported them. Because, you know, they're unpaid athletes too and they get it. So the people who you think should feel disrespected by it really don't.

It's also often a blessing in disguise for the team in the long run as well. It gives the program the opportunity to evaluate the presumed starter at quarterback for next season in a meaningless game against a comparable opponent, as opposed to in the spring game or in early season games against FCS cupcakes.

It's a post-season game that might seem irrelevant to us but certainly means something to that team. I wonder if that offense has other NFL hopefuls hoping to get noticed but now feel betrayed by their "leader" blinded by fantasy $$$.

It's an exhibition game. Only four teams play meaningful postseason games. It's much closer to the Hall of Fame Game than a playoff game. This is like complaining that Austin Carr didn't get to play with Tom Brady in the preseason and that hurt his career and therefore Brady is a prima donna.

You are literally substantially more angry about this than any player on the West Virginia Mountaineers. Another player is already sitting thw game out. And if you think NFL scouts make their evaluations based on bowl games against Syracuse, well.

Tom Brady's DESPICABLE decision to sit out the fourth quarter of a preseason game shows that he isn't a LEADER. Does he even care about KJ Maye?!

Because the game is meaningless to you doesn't mean it is to those involved. Show me links quoting West Virginia players saying this bowl game means nothing to them and I'll agree with you. This game itself won't be the end-all in how those players are evaluated but it's a showcase event nonetheless and part of the season's continuum. I'm not "angry" about the kid's decision, I just see it as antithetical to the sport and his role in it.

NFL Preseason is meaninglessness unlike this bowl game. Bowl games mean something. Head Coaches are measure by bowl wins. Bowl games are not preseason. They are post season births decided on your regular season record.

I dont fault Brady for saving his arm in a few preseason game where he plays so little anyway because I know that he is ready for the season..

I mean, here's what his coach said:

"Will and I spoke at length about the bowl game, and I am fully supportive of his decision to begin his draft preparations. While we will miss him in Orlando, Will's commitment and service to WVU Football over the last three years will be talked about for many years to come. He led us with class, hard work and a willingness to learn, and set a high standard for his teammates."
