It actually was great playcalling. This is all setup from not going deep-ish at all so far. But I am not surprised you still don't understand the nuances of playcalling.
Again this is how NFL games work. The refs look at the clock AND THEN check if the ball has been snapped after it hit 0. This means that the offense gets like half a second after the clock hits 0.
