If the Pats had claimed Phillips for the active roster, his maximum cap hit for the remainder of the season would've been $788k, minus the remaining salary of whoever was moved off the roster to make room (unless it was someone sent to IR, in which case, some portion of their remaining salary would still be hitting the cap, if not all of it). That would've sucked up a lot of the current cap space of $1247k, but still do-able without making an immediate move with a current player's contract.

If the Pats had claimed him for the PSquad, Phillips' cap hit would've been only $99k for the remainder of the season.

Some acquisitions are, indeed, realistically do-able. Others, not so much.

People with huge salaries that they would usually not make a move for anyway, yes. But nothing stops them from doing the usual fifth round trades around the deadline. There is enough cap flexibility to make them happen.

Move 3-4m of Gilmores base salary into cap hits for the next 3 years. Worst case you add a little actual dead money in 2021 because given the other hits they won't move on before that anyway.

Convert most of KVNs base into a signing bonus that gets spread over the final two years.

Convert half of Cannons base salary (4m) into a bonus that gets spread over the rest of his contract.

Extend Ghost. Trade Rowe.

There are enough ways if you ask me. And I purposefully avoided any of the WRs.

I'm sure Bill would love a better coverage LBer. But I think it's pretty clear Bill prefers the physical safeties to fill this role.

IDK.

The number of DTs who are young, affordable, and who have also shown on tape what they can do at the NFL level, and who have shown that they have a skill set that would fit the Pat schemes .... is probably relatively small. If one becomes available, it's probably a good idea to try to snag him and find a spot for him (there's an open one on the PSquad). IIRC, the Pats scouted Phillips pre-draft, so they've probably kept an eye on his development.

It might not be due any significant coaching-staff dissatisfaction with Shelton in particular. Both he and Brown are UFA at the end of this season. The 2019 DT draft class is reputedly strong and deep, but it's never a bad idea to have one or two young players with NFL experience to help fill out the off-season roster for OTs and Camp. Might seem a bit early to be thinking in those term, but when an opportunity arises to snag a guy who you might be able to hold over on a futures contract, why not?

Yeah, people really need to just purge what they saw for the first three weeks from their memory banks. We can bring it back later in the year once we have proper perspective.
