IND game provided two plays that bring two BIG NEW moments in NE offense & can scare the league thinking stopping it. They were made by two new players added - Edelman and Gordon. Incidentally they came back to back and in the most “critical“ moment of the game.

1. Edelman of course brings consistent chain moving (even when he goes for the ball a few yds short of the yellow line one can be confident he will make it to 1st down one way or another). Like @patfanken wrote in his weekly column he also frees more space for others to make plays. But this play here is the most scary addition to Pats O - with every other Pats player (w possible occasional exception of Patterson) and most other players in the league - this is a TFL and the end of the drive. Jules relentlessly and somewhat miraculously - as only he knows how - breaks the tackle and keeps the drive alive (in the only “critical“ moment of the game).

2. The fact that Brady even throws the ball like this (for Gordon) and in that situation is both new and scary. He never throws this ball like that to anybody else (not even Gronk or Jules unless absolutely needed). Usually he throws this ball away. But here he feels like all football fans feel - Gordon is like a magnet for the ball - plus he's physically so hard to stop (even with evident hold like in this play).

This two plays mean simply and scary that every drive in every situation is always very much alive for the Pats..

(TB pass % goes up from around 66% in two previous wins (26/39 vs HOU & 23/35 vs MIA) to over 77% 34/44 vs IND!)

With new wrinkles and real danger that Patterson provides and with Sony getting more in sync with OL and used to NFL game - added to no easy matchups of Gronk, White & co - this unit should really be something if they can stay healthy..

As long as TB is Upright, we will be Alright. TB doesn't get recognition for his arm and deep passes (due to mediots & haters) we saw what he can do when he had Cooks also I'm not into comparing Moss & Gordon but I have to say that TD heave to to Gordon did immediately think of Moss. As for JE, he moves chains and is there when TB needs him which TB's confidence is more evident. With all these weapons and they have, each brings something different and it makes it so dangerous for opposing DC to game plan for. Best is yet to come.

I posted it in the rewatch thread but the play that really should scare defensive coordinators and keep them awake at night is the CP touchdown.

On the one side you have a bunch with CP where the other two players will block ahead. On the other side of the formation you have Gronk split out wide. Now choose your poison where to put extra bodies if you are defensive coordinator. Oh, and also, there is still James White in the backfield.

You can do so many things out of this formation. Replace Hogan or Dorsett with Gordon in the bunch and it becomes even more absurd.

Well said Luuked. Alot of complaints about Patterson because he's not a pure WR but this is the type of stuff he was brought in for.

This was the 2 point play in the SB to Dola. More threatening with Patterson getting the ball.

There's no way Brady was thinking that throw to Gordon was going to be a touchdown when he released the ball!! Such a great catch by Flash!

Why ? He saw Gordon and threw it there trusting he would at least make a play on the ball. Not saying that it was a high percentage throw -- I even called it a questionable decision -- but he clearly wanted this outcome.

I was being slightly facetious in that Gordon was blanketed pretty thoroughly. I guess it just sounded better when I said it to myself rather than typing it out.

I'm also very happy they're making use of the Jet sweep with him... even if it's a fake. With Gordon and Dorsett, they can stretch the D vertically, they can kill you between the numbers and intermediately with Edelman/Gronk/Hogan, and now they can stretch you vertically and get outside. Between those plays and how they're setting up the play action with Michel's effectiveness on the ground, the PA should be absolutely lethal late in the season and into the playoffs (assuming health).

Oh no. Weren’t you around in weeks 1-3? CP is a waste of a pick, can’t play, blah, blah, blah. Hmmmm. Where are those posters?

He is not a waste but he is also not a real NFL WR. He is great once you get the ball into his hands or in space but can't really run many routes. The truth is somewhere in between.

I honestly think that, IF Gordon doesn't self destruct, and becomes proficient in our system, and IF everyone remains healthy, this offense has the potential to rival '07's. Yes, I am saying that lucidly- in '07 we did have Moss, Welker, and Stallworth, but we had an average TE in Watson, etc. and we were mostly a vertical offense then, and had just completely reinvented the slot receiver position with Welker which completely caught everyone off guard.

The current offense, with Patterson's skill sets and the number of pass-catching backs we have, can kill horizontally as well as vertically.

I’m amazed this wasn’t mentioned on the telecast. It’s a carbon copy. Oh well. Not as sexy as the “Philly Special” I guess.

I think the only issue some have with Patterson is his cap. I think it’s 3m? Feel free to correct me if wrong.

So impressed with this team and how it’s starting to look from an offensive point of view. Lots of positives to take into the next game. BB the defence mastermind has a huge job next game though.

Also great to see jules back

My opinion of CP is pretty much the same as it was 3 weeks ago. He's a neat gadget player, and if you treat the short passing game like an extended handoff he can break some tackles and outrun some guys and be generally useful after the catch. But by all accounts he can't learn a simple college playbook, let alone a complicated option passing offense. So he's extremely limited in what he's capable of, and should only be used in situations where telegraphing that your WR almost certainly won't run a route doesn't hurt you much.

Silver lining: this is what makes an athletic freak like him cheap enough that we could afford him. Also, some teams just won't bother covering him at all, and that's how you get some of the easiest 55 yard touchdowns ever scored.

That's not why CP was wide open on that play. He was (initially) covered. However, the defender covering him was literally knocked to the ground by a very well-executed, legal pick one yard off the LOS.

Brady threw those kind of balls to Cooks too. Contrary to popular belief, I think Brady loves having a true deep option threat if his first reads aren't there.

Yep it was the good old REEL (return/wheel) concept that cleared the space.
