In my car this afternoon I checked sports radio and the only choices were Notre Dame vs. Vanderbilt (98.5 Sports Hub) or Bankofamericasox (93.7 WEEI). Couldn't deal with either of them so I switched to local news of the guy getting killed by a shark on the Cape/gas explosions/fatal plane crash in Bedford.

But I was wondering: is Notre Dame football truly THAT significant to people in this area? I understand it's a legacy team synonymous with college football in general, but Notre Dame is almost halfway across the country from Massachusetts and this isn't exactly a college football-crazy area to start with. With the Pats under way and the baseball team doing well, why does Sports Hub opt for something like Notre Dame coverage vs. timely weekend talk about the local teams? Heck, they could even include talk of the region's college grid teams as part of the mix.

Nationally I figured Notre Dame died out about 20 years ago. About the Same time my huskers did. Still big in their respected areas but nationally not so much.

My point is that Notre Dame football seems to be broadcast regularly on local radio which makes no sense to me.

Notre Dame will never die out! (although I am tired of us being bad)

They’re also broadcast nationally on NBC so I could see them getting national radio coverage as well. (I bet NBC can’t wait to get out from under that contract.) I haven’t looked at ratings but I’d imagine abc and cbs kill them due to broadcasting better games.

NBC also carries the games every week. I think it's because of the Notre Dame's history, and also because it's the only dominant Catholic football program in the country (Boston College not the same). It also is one of those true Alma Mater type colleges which gives it a strong base throughout the country.

I think maybe it's a Catholic thing, among people of a certain age. My wife's family is from Texas, many generations in Texas, and devout Catholics. They support the Longhorns and...yes... Notre Dame. The national team of Catholics, it seems. Though among the under-40 set, the loyalty is fading fast.

OK, the Irish Catholic connection in Boston makes some sense but I wonder if these game broadcasts really pull ratings.

The sports hub is owned by NBC, NBC has a contract with Notre Dame, it's that simple.

I don't know how it works but you'd think it could be overridden if local programming pulls in more ad revenue.

Fair enough. Although ND has just scraped by Ball State and Vanderbilt...

I still have faith that frost will turn it around but this season is going to be a long one.

Slow sports Saturday...put Notre Dame on...everyone likes some ND football...

Notre dame is a national team. Will always have a large fan base. I don’t know what it’s like in Mass but they are big in NYC and southern CT

RUDY RUDY RUDY

Tunescribe asks a valid question,

I do not see the appeal of ND.
