This is going on currently. They believe that an over-pressurization of the gas lines has caused some 25-50 structure fires in these 3 communities.

If you know Patsfans members who live in those areas, please check in on them.

It's very bad. The fire departments are overwhelmed due to the number of structure fires.

They've closed exits 42-45 on I-93 I've been told by a friend of mine in the area.

Multiple Gas Explosions In Lawrence, Andover And North Andover

Have siblings living there in Lawrence. They evacuated it's no joke though. My sister told me that she went to cook on her range and the flame almost shot up to the ceiling. She said it was something to do with construction possibly hitting a gas line

Thank God she's ok. That's sounds like a close call.

One thing I heard is that the Gas Company was replacing old lines with new... but it's unclear if this caused the explosions.

I work about 1 mile away from the N. Andover part of the 'epicenter'.

Got an email at 6 PM from HR saying Columbia Gas has told us we need to evacuate due to a gas leak. Everyone making the usual jokes. Headed out to the parking lot and got on to a side road and noticed drivers were very erratic. I've only noticed that level of erratic driving a few times in my five plus decades of life, but this definitely was one of those times.

Headed S on 93 and saw many first responders heading into the fray. Same thing on 495, erratic drivers in my lane, first responders zooming past on the other side. It was a stressful place to be, but obviously far less stressful than those living along Rt 28.

So for me am home and taking in Thu night football but am still pretty stressed out, but obviously less so than those who suffered injuries to themselves or family members or worse, or loss of property, or more.

I'm kinda wondering about that email from HR. Part of me is glad it was just the facts and it didn't trigger panic, but part of me wonders if it should not have imparted more of a sense of urgency?

So far, only one fatality has been reported. An 18 year old who was in his car when the neighbors house went up and the chimney fell on his car..

Holy heck, this is bad. I lived in North Andover for the first few years of my life. Prayers for that community and the others nearby that are impacted. Someone has some 'splaining to do.

I live in Worcester, which is not affected, but I've got gas. Went to the basement to look for, and found, the shutoff valve should an emergency like this ever happen in our area. Sure is a major FUBAR.

What on Earth....

What I don't understand is that there are supposed to be numerous pressure relief valves in this sort of system to prevent exactly this type of thing from happening..

Gonna be a lot of explaining to do..

We had a gas leak last May, and my wife kept asking me if I could smell it, I couldn't. Called 911 and when the firemen responded they immediately began opening windows and saying how strong the odor was. On that day I realized I lost my sense of smell... very weird.

Sounds like a terrible disaster, hopefully the Ins. companies do not get all frugal on the folks who homes and lives were damaged...

Crazy news. Hope your families are all okay.

Sensors too.

Typical Massachusetts. Widespread incompetentce.

Even worse, the Columbia gas company is doing massive CYA by calling it "a series of incidents" and the president is nowhere to be seen and hasn't given a statement.

No explanation has been given, but the general suspicion is that the gas was accidentally overpressurized.

Just seeing on the news a person lost their life due to a chimney being blown off the roof and landing on the person while they sat in their car

Unbelievable

Excellent leadership. A gas explosion that your company is more than likely responsible for occurs and you go into hiding. That's typically something that you would want to get out in front of... even if it's just issuing a press release saying that you're aware of the incident/tragedy and are investigating it further.

Exactly. Too bad there aren't any attorneys (#ambulancechasers) in Massachusetts.
