Sammy Morris. Not a JAG. And a DEFINITE upgrade over Corey Dillon, which I never thought I'd say. Love watching him play. Thrilled to be wrong.

He really is a great pickup. Just keeps driving and getting the hard yards. That means fresh Maroney all season long.

The Pats have hit home runs on five offseason pickups so far: Moss, Thomas, Welker, Morris, and Brady (his blocking is ridiculous). I think Stallworth breaks out soon, but I don't know what to expect from Washington.

He obviously hasn't been showing up in the WR stats, but Washington has really had a great attitude and has been contributing on special teams.

He has accepted his role and is a total team player.

Watch #15 on kickoffs and punts. He's always around the ball and making hits, blocks, etc.!

He may be re-inventing his career here in New England from 3rd or 4th reciever to top level special teams, ala Steve Tasker.

Glad you were wrong as well. I, too, am very pleased with Sammy's performance, as he's definitely a change-up from Maroney and a good complement in a one-two RB punch.

You figure that with the Pats trying to get him a few years ago, he had to have some value, but we never knew how much value until he played in Pats colors. Yes, Sammy's alright!!!

One of the few things I was right about. Thrilled to be right.

(We won't mention Garrett Mills.)

Don't count Mills out just yet. He's not caught a pass for the Vikings, and when they discover that he's not a blocking TE and is really only suited for a team that has the luxury to take advantage of his "special skills," he'll be cut. I expect this to happen once the Vikes issues this season emerge fully, so write this down. The Pats will pick him up for their PS before the end of this season.

As I posted in another thread, Morris has better stats than LdT this season in almost every catagory except TD passes thrown. Thats just funny!

While I'm pleasantly surprised with his preformance so far, I'm going to reserve judgement till I can see some more.

I was sorry to see Mills get away, too.
Because of some inchoate sense of his "special skills:.

But - whatever they are -
how might the Patriots take advantage of them?
I mean, what could he do here
that he can't do there?

Grabbed him as a late round fantasy player, remember some of the lads scoffing at the pick,he's been a pleasant suprise.

Mark me down as wrong about Sammy too. He still has a lot of gas left in his tank.

I was wrong about both Sammy and Welker. Especially the latter, I didn't think he would be nearly as effective as he has been.

On the positive side, I nailed Moss. I knew he was going to be awesome. I was laughing reading the reports out of Oakland, saying how he had lost a step, etc.
He has never had a QB like Brady. And that is why he will stay here after this year, as well.

My opinion was that he'd be Maroney's main backup and would be effective in the passing game. I talked about his having pretty decent power as well. That being said I didn't think the Patriots would use him in what's almost a two headed backfield (Morris has 21 carries Maroney has 35) but I thought he'd get his chances.

We have to think the offenses Morris played in (Dolphins and Bills) might have limited his ability and we're just now starting to fully realize what he can do. That being said he did run for 123 yards last year against the Pats so I thought he could at least be effective and would have the ability to take over for Maroney if injured.

This is slightly like Welker to this point. We all noticed his potential while playing the Dolphins and most wanted him on the Patriots since he seemed to fit the system perfectly. Now, I think most of us thought he'd put up better numbers with Brady throwing to him but I'm not sure anyone thought Welker would already have 14 receptions in just the first two games. I said he'd lead the team in receptions in preseason predictions but He's honestly looked even better than I thought he would at WR.

The reason it's not that much of a surprise that Morris is good --- and he's been VERY good --- is simply, Why would we pay him $4m a year if he was a JAG?

Sammy Morris is a worthless bum!

too much of a lovefest these days lol

But seriously I love what I've seen from Sammy so far, he hits the whole quickly and with force. Maroney, while I love the kid, still is in a battle with himself whether or not to go with his gut on what he sees or try to cut it somewhere else. I'm glad that we have two running backs that can split the load and be effective.

Just because you say it, doesn't make it correct or your previous assessment wrong.

Yes....Sammy Morris is running nice and is a good pickup but I wouldn't say he is an upgrade over Dillon, except at staying healthy. I think that SB year took a lot out of Dillon due to the pounding he took (and gave) that year. Even last year, Dillon still pushed the pile when there was no reciever threat to back off the safety. Don't you think Dillon would have had a much better year last year without 8 in the box and letting the opponent have the waterboys cover the WR's?

You have to put all the parts together before you make a call on an individual. I wonder if Dillon is second guessing the decision to retire.

Sammy is looking about the way I remember him when we played against him, a good change of pace back-up. Basically a solid guy. Interesting that he seems to have taken reps away from Faulk.

I'd like to see Maroney block a lot better and run a lot more decisively, and then we would really have an all purpose running game.

I think it's certainly clear that Morris has much to prove when it comes to being better than Dillon was in 2004, and that's not what I said (or, at least, intended to say). I'm saying he is an upgrade on the JUNK that was Dillon last year and, in some part, 2005. Okay, "junk" is too strong, but the guy was a shadow of himself, especially last year.

IMO, Morris has already shown more spring and playmaking ability than Dillon did last year, or would have this year - which is why I stand by my point that he is an upgrade on what we were getting out of #28, who I LOVE, in 2006.

Mills is actually a pretty decent blocker and the Vikings need someone to develop to take over the role that Kleinsasser played for them.

I understand your point and I won't say that it isn't a valid one. But I still think a lot of the success of the running game this year is going to be based on having our new WR's loosen up the Safeties and LB's. I would have liked to see Dillon stay to try it again....but damn....he looked slow on a couple of his longer runs last year.

I just hope that Morris and Maroney continue to share.....I want to keep them both healthy this year.
