Poor Poggi is fighting for a roster spot this season. Unfortunately he was put into a lose lose situation last night during the 3rd preseason game. After catching a pass from Hoyer out in the open field he is faced with a dilemma of whether to lower his head or not.

Unfortunately he followed the rules while the defender did not. Unfortunately the refs did not throw the flag. Unfortunately Poggi fumbled because of the illegal hit. Great job NFL.

A. If he lowers his head to lower his head to lower his shoulders he could possibly receive a fifteen yard penalty nullifying the yardage gained.

B. If he doesn't lower his head he allows the defender , who F'ing lowers his head, a clean shot at the ball nullifying the positive play.

Lose lose.

The rule:

  1. Player lowers his helmet to establish a linear body posture prior to initiating and making contact with the helmet
  2. Unobstructed path to his opponent
  3. Contact clearly avoidable and player delivering the blow had other options
The play:

The still shot:

It's a paradox.

Agree about the non-call. OTOH, Poggi is clearly not carrying the ball high-and-tight at the moment of contact, so the fumble might have been forced even with a clean hit.

This is classic FUBAR to appease certain segments of the viewership and ownership... last night saw reluctance, but when the season begins there will be more than a few of these penalties which will effect game outcomes..

Nice write up, Tony . with a clear bias though. There is no contact with the helmet at all here!? CAR player hits Poggi with his extended arm! If anything the “helmet rule will ruin football“ crowd should complain the CAR defender played too conservatively here.

Not for one moment did the thought of “helmet rule“ rule cross my mind this game. Even the pathetic Zoo crusader couldn't find something to cling on to. So shout out to coaches, players and officials from me.

As for Poggi paradox (i like the sound of it btw and hope to find a way to use it philosophically) - there certainly is one: How can a player who never catches and runs with the ball (in games or 11v11 practices) catch and run with the ball successfully..?

I dunno if they really care about appeasing the viewers, think they are loading up to help themselves in court later.

Poggi's real dilemma is whether he should keep that pornstache or shave it off.

I'm fairly confident this play did not cost Poggi a roster spot he was never going to win.
Agree but I would like to see him on the PS.

One would think playing against safeties Chung and Pleasant (both Oregon alumni) in practice would have prepped him for this scenario.

I guess a pair of Ducks doesn't a paradox.

Regards,
Chris

I dunno.. it seems easy to distinguish malicious headbutt contact from incedental. If near the head for example or if player is already engaged by another tackler.

It crossed my mind numerous times.

This ends up being helmet to helmet.

This is the helmet to posterior paradox.

Heads not up.

But I do agree that I did not see any spearing type tackles last night and if that's the way they are going to call the game I'm fine but the rule itself and the way it's written leaves plenty of room for a flag happy crew.

I'm confused, was the Carolina defender not just lowering his shoulder. I think the key modifier is "linear" in the rule. If the player lowers his shoulder and head straight on, it's a penalty. If the player lowers his shoulders but leans his head off in one direction or another (i.e. leads with the shoulder and not the head), it's not a penalty.

This little Poggi went “wee wee wee” all the way home.

Is the situation a paradox or is the league office the paradox?
The league office is a litter box.
