11 Things We Learned from the Patriots Win Over The Eagles

Ian Logue

For a game that held a lot of hype by the media because of the match-up, the Patriots ended up making plenty of plays after winning their second preseason game of the year with a 37-20 victory over Philadelphia.

I agree, I like what Flores is doing with the defense. We've had little to no pressure on QB's for a long time and I'm hoping they stick with this aggressive play.

Great.
A 41 year old QB with legendary pocket movement skill but otherwise limited mobility and a surgically-repaired knee now has to play behind a patchwork O-line while every team in the League targets him and his backup seems to still be figuring things out. Fingers and toes crossed plus a few Hail Mary's (not the pass-type :)).

The numbers prove your perception is wrong.

Team Sacks By The Patriots.

2017- 7th (in SB)
2016- 16th (won SB)
2015- 2nd (AFCCG)
2014- 13th (won SB)
2013- 5th (AFCCG)
2012- 15th (AFCCG)
2011- 14th (in SB)

Do you really care that much?

Sacks are not the sole indicator of pressure.

Like the character outlines for Flores and Crossen. Important intangible part of the game.

Can I agree and disagree at the same time?

I agree that sacks aren't that important but pressure is. Forcing the ball out early is the key. imo.

The preseason is the preseason but it looks like they'll get more pressure on the QB this season. Or at least I hope they do.

Agree that sacks are not THE ONLY indicator. Hurries, pressures and hits are also stats that tell us if the D is applying pressure time the passer.

We also don't know how many of those were coverage sacks.

As you know it drives me crazy folks are equating more pressure = better defense. Look at Pitt . They always apply a ton of pressure but haven't won anything

IMO, sacks are a poor indicator of the quality of the defense or the pass rush. Sacks are often a function of system.

I believe that pressures are a much better stat. And yes, they measure the entire defense.

I think they all tell a story.

Pittsburgh is tough to use as a gauge because they're usually in the mix but their defense has had to deal with Tom F'ing Brady to win something otherwise they may have won a couple of times.

I understand what you mean though. I don't mean sending an extra blitzer on every down or compromising containment but I do mean collapsing the pocket and sending an occasional blitzer to keep the QB on his toes or force him to make mistakes.

Anyway I think we'll see more pressure this season.
