Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

And Rowe didn’t get burned? We’ve been down this path before but I’ll say it again, Rowe was one of the worst CB’s in the NFL last year.

Gilmore should’ve been on Jeffrey from the start and Butler could have taken on our Agohlor, who is a pedestrian wide receiver.

Still can’t believe that you guys really think that Butler couldn’t have done anything during the Super Bowl.
Just one of those balls getting completed against Rowe in the Eagles’ first two series going the other way and being stopped is the difference in the game. Sure, he improved as the game went on. But his first two series were absolutely horrific and the Eagles even admitted to going out of their way to target him.

I’ve seen butler give up many 3rd and 6 conversions.
Name one tackle attempt that Butler botched that badly. That’s an open question to anyone in this thread since Andy took the ****y way out a long time ago.

No

As I’ve said all things equal butler is a better choice than Rowe, but all things were not equal.

Yes, if butler arrived in time, worked hard to absorb the game plan, practiced hard and was “DIALED IN” he wold have and should have played, but that wasn’t the player that showed up that day.
Frankly the story I would love to hear about is what he did during his pre anthem meltdown because in my opinion that changed it from “we are starting our with Rowe at cb2 and butler at cb3” to “we can’t put butler out there today”

I’ll be looking forward to when BB takes out one of his best pass rushers in the most important game of the year to try to fool the other teams offensive line and see how people on this board defend that decision.

Joking aside, would we be arguing like this had the Pats won the game?

I actually thought he was playing and I blame NBC for making it such a big deal showing him crying on the sidelines. And then Chris Collinsworth blabbering during the game that he hasn’t seen Malcolm Butler play.

But I was wondering why Rowe was on Jeffrey rather than Gilmore.
I'm sure it would be heavily discussed even if we won considering how poorly the defense played.

I haven't watched the game and barely any clips of it since it happened. I do remember feeling that entire game that we were going to lose. It is still difficult to comprehend that we could have won.

I stand corrected, if the thread provides a religious experience and brings you closer to your Savior then obviously I have underestimated it's importance.

I wouldn’t have had an issue with it because Butler was going to leave in free agency anyways.

And I don’t know why there is a file attached to this response.

No? You may want to do some homework and then get back to me.

Only Butler and BB know.

From what we know, something preparation-related that definitely wouldn’t warrant sitting him on the bench the entire game. Wasn’t bad enough to not dress him altogether while promoting someone else. That is, unless you want to explain the histories of veterans signed to this team mid-week during the season that went on to log snaps that Sunday.
If it did not warrant it then why did it happen?

Belichick put team discipline before putting his best overall unit on the field on the defensive side of the ball for one game and probably believed that the Pats were going to do enough on offense to bail that decision out (which they almost did).

But was the team discipline warranted? And if not then why was Butler benched anyway.

I always thought that the Butler benching may have had an aspect of pettiness on Bill's part. We'll never know to what degree the contract situation impacted their relationship but it's not a big leap to think it soured. Maybe Butler had a few poor practices that week, maybe he missed a flight and that was all the justification he needed to bench him and absolutely refuse to change course even when the Super Bowl hung in the balance.

That always made more sense than a verbal altercation with a coach.

Not by missing tackles.
He has missed tackles and he has missed coverages.
Again in any given Sunday it’s better to have a prepared dialed in butler out there but in this Sunday that butler didn’t exist.

So it's ok for you to argue it's BBs fault but we can't argue it's Butler's fault?

Cut the BS out. You're only proving my point.

The only "arguments" I've criticized throughout all of my recent posts have been related to those who've invoked Belichick's coaching history or the Patriots Super Bowl/AFCCG record as some sort of justification for Belichick's decision.

That's NOT a matter of you arguing whether "it's Butler's fault". Stop it.

Rowe graded out poor last season. I’m hopeful in rookies like Dawson and like crossen to eventually take those reps from Rowe.
