I stumbled upon this series the other day. Anyone who's a fan of Pats history would probably really like this site.

As do I. And I would venture to say any Pats fan over 55 could give more detail off the top of their heads about Earthquake than that 'article' at the site "we would probably really like" contained, boy was that lame.

I never saw any of the pre-2000's Patriots play (I'm 23), but I love learning anything I can about the old guard. Did you see them play a lot?

I am a fan from Game ONE. Back then I was a Giants/NFL fan and when the Patriots were born I took up THAT die-hard fanship in the AFL. I can still see Jim Nance running wild over the Bills. My first Patriots binky was easily one of the best who's ever played

Yep, if you are a New Englander over 50 you were raised as a Giants fan, that's what our fathers were and they were the team on our TV's. I can vividly recall taking the train out of South Station to go to a game with them.

Pro Football at Fenway and it was nowhere near the idyllic cleaned up Fenway you are used to now, it was a grimy dump and the years they played at Alumni & Harvard were upgrades. Hell even with the ridiculous traffic and mud parking lots we were thrilled when Schaefer opened. I can still remember my Dad at a Fenway game saying "Any team with an owner that runs his team on a shoestring playing here like this will never amount to anything until they get a real owner with cash in his pockets instead of holes" Damn if he wasn't right, lol. Wish he could see them now, although he sure would have broken my balls in '07. He crushed us over slowly abandoning his team and switching our full allegiance to the Pats but they were local. My brothers and I could go to 7 games a year instead of one Giants game every couple of years. It might have been scruffy but by God they were at least here and they were ours, not some damn NY team. It just always seemed so incongruous to be rooting for the Giants when we despised the Knicks, Rangers and f'n Yankees.

Any aging Yankees ~ there is no such animal as a "New Englander" ~ who grew up rooting for the Giants committed no sin, 'cause you gotta root for someone, and in those days the only Games on TeleVision ~ or Radio, if you're even older!! ~ were of the Giants.

But you really gotta question the thinking of anyone who didn't immediately drop the New York team in favor of the New EngLand team...Loyalty is commendable, but loyalty to being a Yankee ought to clearly that'f loyalty to a team from New York.

Even so, I repeat: No sin was committed, and any aging Yankee who persists in rooting for the team that he grew up rooting for loses none of my respect...Unlike vermin like Dennis Leary, a native Yankee who grew up in the 60's and started rooting for the Green Bay Championship Packers over the Patriots, in order to compensate for being a flaccid, thieving, verminous, hypocritical parasite. But, hey: he's sure a funny guy.

Not many people over 40 were about to instantly walk away from their generational loyalty for an AFL team back then. Hell I still root for the Giants when they don't play against the Pats. Then there was the whole AFL vs NFL thing and TBH for the bulk of the Sullivan ownership there was always the threat the team might fold or move. Have you forgotten that constant Sullivan induced gnawing uneasiness? More than anything else when Kraft bought the team the removal of that sword from over our heads is what drove the ticket sales after the purchase was announced. It was really the first time in it's existence we could be absolutely certain our little team that couldn't wasn't going anywhere and we had a realistic hope they could finally become a first class organization. Of course they've done a lot more than that, they now stand above them all in a class all by themselves. I laugh at the trolls that call Pats fans bandwagoners, the busted ass wagon I was on took 40 years and a lot of bizarre detours to make the trip from Fenway to Gillette and football immortality.

FWIW, the term New Englander does exist in a sports context where there is only one universally understood meaning to the word Yankee and any true Masshole can't utter it without at least mentally putting a cuss in front of it...
