Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

belichick made a big mistake, but he’s entitled to a pass. without his game plans, there’d be zero super bowl banners at Gillette.

Butler won us a SB in remarkable fashion how quickly you forget.

To say you are Pro BB is a understatement. In BB you trust he doesn't win those Championships without Brady and thats a fact. That said in the SB your Idol thought that Jordan Richards was a better player in that Pathetic Defense than Malcom Butler. I know the Majority of Patriots fans whether they want to admit or not disagreed. I haven't forgiven BB yet for that Blatant Blunder.
It's not defending BB. It's stating what happened.

If he thought Malcolm could help him win he would have played him.

Malcolm was not consistent in 2017. He admitted that.

This is a perfectly reasonable conclusion but that doesn't necessarily mean Belichick made the right decision.

I might think it's in my best interest to do 'x' rather than 'y', and I might have some reasoning and evidence to support my decision to do 'x', but in reality 'y' may have been the better option.

I'd like to think Belichick didn't act in a stubborn, spiteful manner, and that he had very legitimate reasons to not play Butler which were purely tactical (and not personal) in nature.

However, that doesn't mean that the decision he made ultimately gave them the best chance to win, despite what were hopefully his best intentions.

We know he had the flu and we know he had been bringing up the contract all year. It’s more established and based in reality than Butler fighting with coaches or doing drugs
Many players get sick a week before a game and many players want New contracts. Established or not I'm going to need more.

We have no information that on that day, BB did or didn't make a mistake.

The only reason fans are still *****ing about this issue is because they lost.

Hey, my clock stopped working, it was working and making this weird *errrrrrr* noise, so i opened it and i took this gear out, and the *errrrrr* noise stopped but now the clock doesn't work. I'm pretty sure it's not my fault though.

One blunder doesn't change the fact that he's a great coach but this one still leaves me scratching my head. I really hope we get some players on defense.

So the pats would have won SB49 if belichick wasn’t the head coach?

Well you don’t know more so it sounds like you are talking out your butt to get the conclusion you want

Even before I heard what Butler did I gave BB the benefit of the doubt that he did what he did with reason.

The question should not only be whether Bill was right or wrong in sitting Butler. We lost. The real question comes down to motive. Regardless of what I might of heard and if you accept it you still have to decide if you think BBs motives were pure.

On a play he was specifically coached to make.
(see what I did there? a BB/Butler, XLIX/LII ,chicken/egg argument ought to be good for another 2k posts on this thread)

It's not nonsense.

For a player to publicly say he was not 100% ready for the SB is a big deal.
What formations did the Patriots run that Butler was not involved in throughout the season?

The whole benching caused an enormous amount of confusion on the D. You had Chung and others playing out of their position. Complete disaster.

Even before I heard what Butler did I gave BB the benefit of the doubt that he did what he did with reason.

That doesn't explain what you've been posting here. Here's some of the publicly known "reality":
  • BB says it was a football decision
  • Butler says it was nothing about drugs or bad behavior, and has not been contradicted by BB or the team
  • Amendola says he couldn't get an explanation, and feels Butler could have helped
  • Rowe says that he didn't know he was starting until right before kickoff
  • McCourty claims that everyone knew Butler wasn't starting all week, but Butler was originally in the starting lineup given to the media a day or two before the game, and run by NBC before the game.
  • Butler never played a snap on defense, but played a snap on special teams.

For you to dismiss the obviously reasonable takes of others based upon that information as unreasonable is asinine on your part. Those takes might be right or wrong, but at least some of them are reasonable based upon the publicly known information.

The question should not only be whether Bill was right or wrong in sitting Butler. We lost. The real question comes down to motive.

Motive for what? Motive for sitting him to start the game? Motive for him playing one ST snap. Motive for never getting him off the bench to play defense?

Which motive is the one for the "real question"?

Regardless of what I might of heard and if you accept it you still have to decide if you think BBs motives were pure.

No, I don't. You've decided to be unreasonable in your defense of your source and BB. That's your right. However, that doesn't require everyone else to abide by your choice.

I think Bill made a mistake. It would have taken assault or worse for me to want someone as key as Malcolm on the sidelines.

But some of you guys post like Bill actually just didn't have a clue or lost his mind. How long have you been following this team? By now you should be well-accustomed to never getting the inside story on why they do the things they do but there is always a reason behind their actions.
