So...another Rob Ninkovich? I mean we need all the help we can get on defence so why not? But with Clayborn and Flowers a DE isn't that big of a need compared to LB, unless BB has no plans to extend Flowers after the end of next season.
Speaking of whom should we extend Flowers?
Interesting question.
Any extension of Flowers now would most likely
increase his 2018 cap hit and require a corresponding cap-hit
lowering extension for someone else - Brady, Gronk, Devin McCourty, Cooks, etc. - entirely possible. OTOH, it seems likely to be cheaper in the long run than waiting until Flowers is a UFA next spring.
However, whether or not retaining Flowers is desirable depends on what BB has in mind for the defensive scheme.
If BB intends to strongly re-emphasize 3-4 type fronts going forward into 2019,
and if Flowers can't be as effective in more of a standup, off-the-line OLB-type role as others, then he may be reduced to more of a part-time player. So it wouldn't necessarily be a big deal to lose him in FA, especially not with Clayborn under contract through 2019 as a "bridge".
I'm not suggesting that this
will happen, but that it seems a possibility to me.
Even if BB is staying with a more balanced 4-3/3-4 hybrid, with Clayborn in place, it would still be hypothetically possible to forego drafting a Flowers replacement until 2019 and spend the picks on LBs in this draft. If the 4-3 aspects are to continue to be emphasized as much as they were in 2016, though, the ideal would be to extend Flowers AND draft another similar DE is
this draft to add to the DL edge-rush and preserve more continuity.
IOW, it depends on where BB is headed with things. What types of front-seven players he drafts this year may give us a clue.
