But the 3.91m tender was not guaranteed money, so by him playing he would have gotten it

The quote was - a 6 year, $66M deal with $25.5M guaranteed, with a parenthetical saying it's was basically a 5 year, $62M extension on top of the $3.91M.

In reality, there is no way that the contract would have been structured as a nonguaranteed base salary of $3.91M for 2017, then $25.5M in new guaranteed money beginning in 2018. Yates was just trying to put it into perspective and the Patriots thought process. Butler was giving up more in overall average annual value (11M per year versus 12M per year) in order to have his payday now. The 3.91M tender would have been ripped up, and Butler would have gotten something like a $5-$10M signing bonus immediately with escalating base salaries thereafter.

His total guaranteed money over the 6 year time period was $25.5M *inclusive* of the $3.91M RFA tender that would have been torn up. It wouldn't make sense otherwise. Instead he played for $3.91M in unguaranteed money in 2017, and he's getting $30M in new guaranteed money over the next 5 years. That's $4.5M in additional guaranteed money.

Jordy, if healthy (and that’s a big if), would be a deadly addition to the recieving corps.

Perfect Dola replacement.

Still waiting to hear on Bradham and Brown....
Mychal Kendricks might be in play.

Allen-How much do we spend to replace him? What suggestions do we have? Sure, he didn’t kill it in the passing game, but he’s a helluva blocker and this line is already going to have its share of growing pains as it is. I’d rather re-work his deal.

Richards-Don’t care what the do with him, I just don’t want to see him on the field with the D ever again.

Gillislee- Again, how much is it going to cost to replace him, and who do we replace him with? We are already needing to replace two contributors from last year.

Dorsett-How much is it going to cost to fill his spot? He has 1 year in the system and he is cheap, gonna be hard to replace that for an amount that equals savings.

If you want to cut these guys because you think they are ****, that’s a different conversation. But, if we are talking just to save cap money, it just doesn’t make much sense to me.
Richards and Gillislee can be replaced in the draft.

Allen is simply not worth his contract although I wouldn't mind re-signing him for around vet minimum, if possible.

Dorsett is a guy I wouldn't mind staying. I was just throwing it out there.

I hope Richards can’t be replaced..

Am I the only one optimistic about Antonio Garcia?

Sucks losing Solder. He’s a good tackle, but the Pats were preparing for this. They drafted 2 Tackles last year.

Dude missed his entire rookie year including all practices and meetings due to an illness that caused him to lose 40lbs. So yes, you are the only one to be optimistic about him.

and he's getting $30M in new guaranteed money over the next 5 years.

Except he's not though. It has come out that it's only $24m guaranteed at signing. The other $6m is only guaranteed if he is on the roster March 2020. Which in this league isn't guaranteed AT ALL. He'll be 30 in March 2020 and who knows maybe his play ends up dropping the next 2 years where he ends up being a cap casualty.

Patriots have alot of value out there.
Linebackers are out there
Edge help with Trent Murphy
Some solid number 2 to 4 defensivebacks.
Kenny Vaccaro
Serviceable runningbacks including Burkhead
Maybe the prospect of Suh
I am not worried this is the course.
Like your thoughts.

Your total of rookie money and reserves is $7M-$8M. I think that this is light. There are other costs (player 52, player 53, and the practice squad. I think that we needed $10M or so last year. But, yes, there are there other sources for getting cap money later in the season to cover SOME of these costs.

The Pats currently sit at 21M in Cap Space under the Top 51 Rule. They will only need 2-3M (not 5) for Draft picks. They will likely keep about 5M in reserve, but that can come from many different places, including changes to current contracts.

The Pats have about 18M.. Not 10M..

I don’t think I’m interested, but that’s yet another name on the market.

Ok, that's different then. But at the same time, I'm sure it would come out that only a certain portion of the $25.5M in "guaranteed money" that Yates is reporting about the Patriots offer was actually guaranteed; I'm sure he doesn't have all the nitty-gritty, he just has the positive spin that his contacts at the Patriots are feeding him. So I'm skeptical about the whole thing. It is fair to say that Butler bet on himself and he likely did no worse than he would have had he just signed with the Patriots last year.

certainly with regard to playing LT

WOW. big FA far from over

He would be a very helpful player, the ability to play pretty much every DB position effectively would be a boon to the secondary, and it would provide insurance for Chung and McCourty that we really don't have right now (Harmon is a nice player and can do some of what McCourty does, but we play big nickel often and don't have a backup to replace Harmon in that case; Richards isn't a nice player at all). We could effectively play either of the big dime packages with him there (3 safeties or 4 safeties) assuming team health. I wonder what his market will be?
