I know this doesn't fit in with evaluating TEs based on receptions and TDs alone but I'm around 60% sure the Pats would rather have Allen than Jimmy Graham.

Jimmy Graham is the opposite of DA. He's more if a large receiver than true TE like Gronk.
I think fans are spoiled by Gronk and forget there are two main functions of a TE, blocking and receiving and if the TE isn't a great pass catcher some fans think he sucks. There's only 1 Gronk

Which is why he’s still the highest priority for us this offseason, with Solder coming in second. They need to smooth things over and have Gronk on board for the rest of Brady’s time here.

I think we already had a pretty good idea, though. Recent pacts to Brown, Hopkins, Evans, and Adams have helped to paint that picture, and OBJ is next. Those are all deals that are 15m+ AAV. The franchise tag (top 5 WR pacts) was 16.2m this year.

When you factor in the 14m dollar AAV deals given to Green, Thomas, and Bryant a few yrs ago, it seems as though the market has been set for top 10 WRs. The only real question is the amount of guaranteed money, which in Evans’ case was surprising to me. That said, I do believe that he is a bona fide top 5 WR stud.

While he’s certainly talented, he’s kind of developed a rep for having a bit of a bad attitude, doing his own thing, and being very expensive while doing it. Just not sure if he’d be considered here with the expected market value he’ll command, our current cap situation, priorities at some of the other positions, and fact that he doesn’t seem to be the greatest fit in the locker room.

Yes, I'm aware of his reputation, it kind of goes without saying. His market value is under dispute. He has played as a marquee take for a few years while performing as an above average player maybe due to being on a badly managed team.

I know there will be a cost, but certainly not as much as a fool like Mike Tannenbaum would pay. It certainly depends on his appetite for success.

And it's not unheard of for the Patriots to take on a player with a bad rep... unless you have forgotten Randy Moss, Aqib Talib, Martellus Bennett, and a certain tight end.

I think the difference between a guy like Suh and the players you have listed would be cost + value. I think we got pretty good value out of their (then) reasonable cost, whereas I have a hard time envisioning that same scenario with a guy like Suh, who I believe may get better offers than you’re expecting.

Ultimately, I just don’t think that we can afford him being pretty tight to the cap and having some of our own key players that would likely take priority over taking a gamble on a malcontent outsider with a bad attitude who will almost certainly command double digit millions per year. Just my opinion. Of course it would be nice to have that kind of talent at DT.

It seems to me that the Shelton signing makes any potential Suh acquisition unnecessary.

While Shelton may not directly provide the kind of QB pressure that Suh might, Shelton's presence on the interior DL seems very likely to provide significantly increased opportunities for those playing beside him (Valentine, Brown, Guy) to get pressure, a probably make life a little easier for the edge-rushers as well.

Shelton should be the lynchpin that the DL was missing in 2017 with Valentine on IR and Branch is steep decline.

Moreover, if the Pats pick up Shelton's 5th-year option, they'll be getting two years of his services for about the same price as what Suh would likely be demanding for one year.

Not arguing that, just seeing the numbers it’s not unreasonable to think that cooks is going to want north of 60 over 5.
