The eagles have too many TEs.

Given their Tannenbaum-level cap hell, if they hope to re-sign Burton, they almost have to cut Celek to gain his $4M in cap space. They certainly can't cut Ertz and his $10.6M cap hit, because it would actually put them about $2.6M deeper into the hole against the cap - which is already a $9.1M red number even before including Michael Bennett. Furthermore, Ertz's contract (above even Gronk-level) has four years left on it, which may make an extension-restructuring difficult.

The Eagles have only five days left to get under the cap. I'm guessing that they cut Celek ($4M), Torrey Smith ($5M) and Chris Long ($2M), and try to unload Vinny Curry ($11M) via a trade. They'll still need to restructure players like Graham ($7M), Jenkins ($10.1M) and Lane Johnson ($12.5M), just to get be able to re-sign Burton, maybe Bradham, and still have some breathing room.

The Eagles are currently about $15M over the cap, with only five days left to fix that. Taking on Marty at $3M at this point probably means they don't get to re-sign Trey Burton or Nigel Bradham.

Curry's production vs cap hit makes him a tough move other than to a team with plenty of cap room (Jete?). Likewise taking a $6m hit to save $5m is less than ideal, seems like a restructure would be the order of the day.

Probably would need to involve a 1-year extension. As it stands with his remaining 3 years. every $3M of his $9M 2018 salary that they convert to signing bonus spread out over the three years, gains them $2M off his $11M 2018 cap hit. E.g., they run his salary down to $3M, they reduce his cap hit to $7M, which does help.

If they add a year, and spread $8M of his salary over the four years, they reduce his cap hit to $5M - a $6M savings. Of course, that bumps his 2019 and 2020 cap hits to $15M & $16M and means they eat $10M in dead money if the cut/trade him next season (when he'll be 31).

Clearly, Roseman and Tannenbaum took the same Salary Cap Management classes in college.

Well, a week ago, the day before Michael's deal was announced, the Pats had maybe $7M in usable cap space. Michael's salary would've sucked up nearly all of that. Martellus was taking up another $6M+, with a $2M roster-option bonus looming.

If there was actually any offer from the Pats (I remain skeptical), maybe it was the Pats dragging their feet, or maybe it was Martellus (and/or, informally, Michael) not agreeing to a cap reduction sufficient to make the deal financially feasible until it was too late.
