Kenny Britt Coming Back & Branch Out

Uncle Phil was outstanding here in 2014-2016. BB squeezed the last drop of goodness out of a career in NFL purgatory.

Still love the story of how BB kicked him out of TC practices in 2016 for cutting a nuclear fart during a team meeting.

Been there, done that.

At least I yelled, "FIRE IN THE HOLE!" beforehand.

Blah yuck thought we’d be done with Britt.

Given the WR corps,

Edelman - coming off ACL surgery
Amendola - FA
Mitchell - quite possibly not long for the league due to chronic knee issues
Hogan - disappointingly brittle
Dorsett - seemingly yet to establish himself, even with Edelman having been out for the season
Cooks - outside WR who doesn't handle the middle of the field well, to this point

and the fact that they'd signed Britt to that 2nd year in the first place, why would you have thought that?

Quick question.... How is Hogan brittle?

I am curious to see what Dorset does with full camp. May be nothing or could become a real player.

Looking at how Hogan enters his final year of contract without any guarantees except 280k in a roster bonus I think there is a good chance that he will sign an extension that further reduces his (already small) cap charge in exchange for a guarantee that he won’t be cut at the end of camp and be left with nothing.

That being said he is also my dark horse candidate for surprise trade/cut. If MM works himself back, Dorsett builds a connection with Brady, Edelman comes back close to his original self and Dola re-signs there will be a logjam at the position. He seems like the most expendable if you also consider his age.

Reviewing the WR list, it occurred to me that there are a couple of things that might impact positional counts on the final 53.

1) Punt returner.

Given how BB has spoken at length about the significant differences in required skill sets between returning punts and returning kicks, this clearly isn't some ancillary, "anybody can do it" role. I think Amendola inherited that role from Edelman because he has great hands and, perhaps just as important, has the wisdom to know when to attempt a return and when not to.

The current candidates for PR are:

Amendola - UFA - PR ability is a significant added value for him
Edelman - coming off ACL
Cy Jones - some NFL experience, some potential as CB-reserve/ST
Reedy - some NFL experience some potential as a slot-WR/RB
McCarron - P-squad slot WR on futures contract (no NFL experience)

It seems to me that BB may add a couple more candidates to this menu through the draft, especially among UDFA (college PR experience may be more of + for prospects than it has in the recent past - perhaps something to keep in mind when evaluating DB, WR and RB prospects for this draft). However, as high-value as the PR role is, it's still unlikely that BB carries a PR specialist on the 53-man roster who doesn't contribute in any other way. This dual-role/versatility requirement may be especially pertinent for the 2018 roster, because ...

2) Third QB.

In the seemingly likely even that BB drafts an understudy QB next month, that will "short" the count at some other position. Historically, that's been mostly on the OL (which maybe further enhances the value to the Pats of Fleming and Croston over Waddle), but this could also add to the squeeze at WR and DB (and perhaps RB) wrt the PR issue.

Even though Camp is a long way off, it'll be interesting to see who takes reps at PR. If Dorsett is smart, he'll already be balls deep in learning how to return punts.

One thing we know about Belichick: he always pays attention to players who play hard to the end of the game in a losing cause against the Pats. Wes Welker was the poster child (he even kicked a field goal, if I recall correctly, because the Fins' kicker went down). Then there was Martellus Bennett scoring an exceptional touchdown for the Bears right at the end of a blowout loss with Brandon Browner covering him by trying to pin him in a wrestling hold.

And same thing with Kenny Britt, if you remember. It was right at the end of the game and the Rams were in 4th and 11 but he completed a 66-yard reception and then finished it off with a TD catch.

(The big reception is notable for some really *horrible* defense from the Patriots. Malcolm Butler is completely beaten by a pretty simple misdirection and Devin McCourty actually moves further away from Britt as he makes his move instead of following him. But there is no one else for McCourty to cover within twenty yards -- he is simply looking into the backfield.)

Britt is a solid option at a incredible friendly cap number.
Would still love to see Alan Robinson guess I have to settle for Kenny Britt.

Wouldn't mind Alan Robinson either on a "prove it" type deal seems like Malcolm Mitchell is made of glass.

If Hogan isn't sure that he's part of the future, why would the team extend him, and guarantee him money?

However, you are correct, there is an opportunity for an extension that would reduce the cap, say with a $3M bonus and $1M 2018 salary, on a 3 year contract. The cap would be $2M plus any roster or other additional bonuses. This saves $1M and gives the team a player with potential upside.

Same as Dola the last two years. Reduce the teams cap hit in exchange for more security to not go through camp for nothing for the player.

Getting released after camp sucks in terms of finding another team that pays significantly above the minimum.

Danny was damaged goods. If Hogan's agent believes the same, then, yes, a deal can be made for cheap.

Are you suggesting an extension, or a reduction in compensation?
