According to Albert Breer, HT’s pec muscle was 55% torn at the time he signed the extension in March. Pretty sure this qualifies him for PUP or short term IR. So either the Pats did not examine him and didn’t know about the injury (unlikely) or they knew about it (likely) and chose to play him in the hopes that it would not get worse. It was a huge blunder.

Dont'a Hightower Reportedly Placed on Season-Ending IR with Pectoral Injury

The bottomline is that having all necessary information in this case the medical staff obviously thought that working through it was the way to go. Just because it ended up badly it doesnt mean that their decision was bad at the time that it was made.

Just because the medical staff says something about a player’s injury doesn’t mean they made the right decision at the time. If they knew HT had a 55% tear, they ought to have known his pec muscle was hanging by a thread. We’re not talking 10 or 15 percent tear here - we’re talking over half the muscle. He should have gotten surgery or rested until it got better.

You do realize that Hightower was signed in March, right? Do you honestly believe that it didn't heal at all between March and September when he started playing in regular season games?

LOL.. So 45% of the muscle being intact is "hanging by a thread"?

Also, you do realize that Hightower is the one who has the final say, right? If HE felt that it would heal fine on it's own despite what the medical staff told him, that's HIS decision to make. At some point you have to accept that.

HT can do what he wants as far as getting treatment. However, HT does not have the right to determine whether he plays. At the end of the day, BB makes the decision of who gets put on IR or PUP as long as the player has an injury. BB has the authority to tell a player that he cannot play until he’s 100%.

March to August (when training camp starts) is only 5 months. It’s not a long time to heal a serious injury.

1. Bolden (1 year retainer a la Amendola)
2. Fleming or Waddle (Fleming stays healthier and hopefully no one thinks he's starter material, but someone probably does)
3. Solder (could be tough)
4. Marquis Flowers (must)
5. Ricky Jean-Francois (incentive-laden)
6. James Harrison (1 year deal, with incentive laden tied to 2nd year)
7. Martellus Bennett (rip up contract and resign 1 year deal with incentives)
8. Rex Burkhead (2 year deal)

All the FA options are really in-house needs, not ones from other teams.

If were going to cut TE's i have no problem with it either.
If were looking at TE's i've been trying to find a Jordan Reed/ Arron H in the draft and there's no one close to the size and speed..

If were going for TE's i'm looking at Mike Gesicki or Dallas Goedert personally.

From a Free Agency point of view, i would like to see Tyler Eifert, i think it will need to be a heavily incentive deal so we don't get to heavily hit from the cap, due to his injury issue.
When/if Bennett & Allen are released, I would more seriously than Eifert consider the donkeys' Virgil Green, a very athletic blocking TE. I doubt however that he leaves Denver if contract offers are similar.

Gary Barnidge is still available, having not signed anywhere last season while he lived off the money Cleveland still owed him.

And hard to believe, but Old (37!) Friend Ben Watson is also a free agent.

Regarding the draft, I would rather use ALL of any Day 1/2 picks on defense, provided that Gronk has informed Bill that he's playing in 2018. If true, and if Bill can secure a couple of 5th-7th-round picks, then Ryan Izzo (for blocking) and Adam Brenneman (for pass-catching, if the medicals on his knees are good enough) would be where I would start looking.

Sony Michel is a prototypical Patriot. I would be absolutely fine with him as the back-up plan to Dion if Dion takes off.
It would almost certainly take one of our Day 2 picks in order to be in position to draft Michel, and there is no way that I would ever consider using one of them on a RB. If I did decide to use any of those Day 2 picks on offense, then it would only be for LT or TE.

55%?!

Not 54% or 56%, but precisely 55%?

Since no one else has mentioned it yet, Chris Ivory was cut by Jacksonvi....zzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz(snort)zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...................

BTW, David Harris has just announced that he is going to retire. So that add some more cap space.

Hmm interesting, did okay a few season ago for the Jets i think.. might be worth a look at possibly

Miguel has got the cap space at $16,314,554

David Harris just retired. Takes away his cap hit.

New total also reflects some earlier adjustments with regard to Lawrence Guy.

Actually four cuts by JAX today (including Ivory). Tampa informed a coupe RFAs that they won't be tendered.

The annual NFL "Roster Purge" may have just begun. Lotsa players to become SFA over the next couple weeks.

Hightower tore his pec in week-7 (Oct 22nd), nine months before the start of 2018 Camp.

No, Hightower tore his pec some time during the 2016 season. In March 2017 when he was a free agent, he had a 55% tear (according to Albert Breer). He reaggravated it in October 2017. My point was that it would have been tough for him to get to 100% between March 2017 and August 2017 for the start of training camp.

That's including the cuts and Guy.
