Rewatch SB: Pats vs. Eagles - X's and O's ONLY!

Yeah this has been bugging me. Presnap the corners were off. Brady knows that d line is good and so far they didn't sack him but he's got to think they're due at some point to get a sack. I flat out just wished he took the flat instead of trying to go for a signature play. I mean there's over 2 minutes anyways, there's plenty of time. If you look at the first play on that drive where we went to Gronk, the d line was going after it. I would not have messed around trying to go deep on the next play.We had that secondary against the ropes.

With all the trash on D, MP, BB . BB managed to bring the team to a winning situation like he usually does - 2:21, 2 time outs, 6 points needed for win, ball in TB hands - Id guess that's a 80% winning scenario ..

When Long hit Keenum's hand from right side rush and the game took a definite PHI turn I said to myself this could never happen to Brady (from that side in such game/situation) . he'd sooner throw it away or secure it to his body like he usually does. This one will bite him for a long while for sure..

The one thing that not many talk about which surprised me was that BB/Joe Judge didnt onside kick the ball after the Pats scored the go ahead TD. I am not sure anyone would have expected it, the defenses were getting shredded on both sides and worst case you saved yourself 4-5 minutes of time.

Then again there were still 9 minutes on the clock so I guess he thought there would be maybe 2 full possessions possible. Nobody expected a 7min drive..

Haven't watched the replay

Need to... Another reason I hate to bet on games.. you can never relax and enjoy

A winnable game for sure

Having watched the pats for years , it was uncharacteristic..even those 1st 4 games of the season wasn't this bad

Trick plays... bad kicking game..awful defense...eagles made another 1st down on 3rd down...maddening

Could NE have underestimated Philly?

How the hell did Flowers not sack Foles? I've watched the play several dozen times and I still cannot explain it. It's like he just stops for a split second......

I think that Flowers might've thought that Foles was going to move to his right, like Matt Ryan did last year. He instead moves to his left, just enough to avoid contact and to find Ertz. Still pisses me off that OPI wasn't called on Celek.

The odd thing is that after all the talk about offensive production being down in the 2017 season the SB featured the highest offensive output of any game in NFL history. o_O:oops::confused:

Because he got pushed to the left by the Eagles guard and Foles slid to the right. The angle on this picture doesnt tell the whole story.

He was very close but still a fraction of a second away from Foles. Which is pretty much the story of the entire game for the pass rush.

Haven’t seen that angle.

My word, you weren’t kidding. That’s literally the sum of the game.

Every bounce went the Eagles way.

Five things on this play:

(1) The left tackle saves Foles' ass. Flowers is going to crush him but that little nudge to the inside - which is not a move you'd normally make if you're the LT - saves him.

(2) Foles slides to his left beautifully - just enough to get the pass off.

(3) Van Noy's stunt is just a tick late in coming. If he timed that a little better, the LT has a choice to make. As it is, the LT has time to chip Flowers and then make a play on Van Noy. As it was, KVN still nearly gets to Foles as well.

(4) Harmon goes after the RB coming out of the backfield and over plays the area where Ertz ends up catching the ball. If he had stopped sooner and covered Ertz, then Foles would have had nowhere to throw the ball and he would have been buried by Flowers and KVN.

(5) This makes me even more pissed about the non-call on the pick play, which frees Ertz up.

If you are interested what other shave said about some of those things check the first few pages of this thread. We have been through some of them.

On Harmon I can just recommend watching the gif posted from the broadcast. Duron was where he was because Foles threw a short glance to the RB on the wheel which kept Harmon stuck between his two responsibilities. Cheating on the wheel could have been not only a conversion but a potential TD so he made the right choice.

The delayed KVN rush seems to be key to the entire thing even more so than DMac getting picked. KVN would have been in the area where Foles wanted to go. If he stays in I think Foles has to go for the low percentage throw on the wheel or gets sacked by Flowers.

DMac getting picked sucks but those things happen to every team. It is a pity it had to happen in this situation for us.

Yep, Van Noy needed to make a quick decision between rushing and covering,
but he made it too late and therefore ended up accomplishing neither.
And I really, Really wished he had put his arms in the air as he was nearing Foles.
The Pats defense has never done that enough for my liking.

Any chance the delay was by design ? We have seen a couple of slightly delayed pressures over the last two seasons so that lineman engage somewhere else and are maybe caught on the wrong foot.

Could've been by design, though a delayed rush when the offense only needs one yard is something I would not have advised attempting.

He was probably defending the naked bootleg, and had a rush option.

Also possible; but when there is only one yard to gain, defenders really should just do one thing, and do it very quickly. There's simply no time for anything else.

Why are you guys doing this to yourselves? This reminds me of rewatching the last minutes of Super Bow 42 in disbelief about a dozen times subconsciously wishing for a different outcome. Understanding what happened in greater detail doesn't lessen the pain any.

Because the more you or anyone look at the game, directly, the more you'll understand that we got beat by a good team that played its best game of the year, with Pederson calling his best game ever, and a QB that frankly played lights out.

Philly had an outstanding game plan that was executed very well.

So ultimately, we shouldn't feel that bad about the loss.

However you want to rationalize it to feel better. I looked at the game "directly" for a little over three hours and saw the worst Patriots defensive performance since week one and a superhuman effort by Tom Brady. That's all I really needed to understand.

Your interpretation of "directly" is much different than mine.

There was a very good reason that the defense, on surface, appeared to have turned in its worst performance of the season.

I'll bet you also can talk yourself into rationalizing the nutritional value of rotten eggs and sour milk. ;) The fact Philly is a very good team is a given -- you can say the same for ANY NFL team making it to the Super Bowl and then given two weeks to prepare. No amount of film study or situational analysis at this point mitigates the fact that New England gave up 41 points when it scored plenty on offense. That defensive performance was abysmal however you want to characterize it. Communication sucked, discipline and fundamentals were awful, physical mistakes were embarrassing. But again, if polishing a turd makes you feel better ...
