Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

Dude, there were 3 dropped picks and collinsworth was even pointing out how brady was missing, and i cannot stand collinsneck.

He gained over 250 yards and was not stopped ONCE!!!

Not once.

3 runs ended one drive.
A missed FG.
2 plays that were badly executed ended another.

Did Pete carol sabotage his team when he decided to pass instead of running Lynch?

Is it quicker to Tulsa Oklahoma or by bus?

Combine that with yours and we now have 2 irrelevant questions.

you would first need to have alook inside of Pete Carrol's head

When you fall out on the side of the Jersey Turnpike, you will have realized that your question is pointless

THIS. Brady has always had to overcome the shortcomings of the defense in every Super Bowl but this was the first time that his job was made deliberately harder thanks to Belichick.

The most impressive thing on that list is that he did it during a
Not to mention that the defense has allowed a TD in the last 2:30 minutes in:

SB 36
SB 37
SB 39
SB 42
SB 46
SB 52

It would have allowed another in SB 49 except for Seattle's decision to throw/Butler's reaction.

It allowed Atlanta into field goal range where literally kneeling three times would have given them an 11 point lead.

On top of that AFCCG 2006.

It's really unbelievable that we've won 5 of those with defenses that have always collapsed at the end.

SB 37? o_O

Benching Malcolm Butler was another stroke of genius from Bill Belichick ... in theory

It is a pretty interesting theory that smells like it might be going into the right direction. The most important sentence in there is this:

In short the author explains on a schematic level that this was almost the inverse gameplan that BB is famous for with the Giants. He wanted to avoid the Eagles gashing them slowly on the ground, grinding the game out leaving Brady on the sideline.

Go and read it if you have time.. it gives an interesting perspective into what might have been the motivation for this weird gameplan.

I would please ask anyone to stay on topic and dont turn this into another Butler thread. This thread is for the discussion of that potential gameplan and not to whine about BB stealing a title from you.

The other thing that gets pointed out again is that while Rowe said that he didnt know about the Butler benching until before the kickoff we know now not only that the captains knew days ahead that Butlers role got minimized:

And this article points out that Rowe even practiced with the first team defense instead of Butler the entire time:

So can we at least stop propagating this the team got shocked before kickoff narrative ?

This is the dumbest explanation of all time. Whoever wrote this should be fired

I know that you really want to believe that BB doesn't screw up......but he screwed up......at least in regards to the goal of winning the SB......maybe he sees himself as a man of impeccable moral standards and he simply believed that making his point was a priority over winning the SB , but I doubt it

Only an idiot wouldn't admit that BB screwed this one up. He's a great coach, but he cost us this SB. People ripped on Brady in the Dolphins loss, but those same people can't imagine that BB made a mistake.

We handed the Eagles the SB and Brady was the only one trying to take it back.

Seems to me this strategy might have worked if on 3rd and long they swapped Butler back in?

The plan described in this piece is pretty much what I figured it must have been just from watching the game and observing the personnel packages. It failed not because it was a bad plan, but because the players - all of them - simply failed to execute consistently enough from the get-go.

It actually seemed pretty obvious to me.

And I really don't believe that putting Butler on the field would have magically improved anything whatsoever.

The offensive plan was also a departure from the regular season norm (not that very many fans noticed), though perhaps not as "radical". It was very similar to the offensive plan in the AFCCG. The ground game was better in the SB than in the AFCCG simply because the players on the field executed more consistently.

Sorry but you play butler. You go with your horses. It's inexcusable. I have no doubts that butler would have done a good job on a guy like agholor.

Morality is not one of BBs strong suits. Not even close.

I agree, I still think there is a piece of information missing. Butler was either sick or not doing something or doing something.

I wish we could find that info

How about on just ONE third and long?

Morality, Discipline......all that sh.t
OK.

BB was banging chicks left and right w/ the Browns, Jets and Patriots and has no issues playing druggies, drunks and wife beaters....

Yea like I've been saying since Monday, both BB and Malcolm are lying

Really? it's pretty obvious to me that BB was not putting Butler in come hell or high water. And sure enough, it came.

Glad you can see alternate realities and what would have happened if one of the other three got injured..

Claiming emotions caused a loss is speculation
Unless you're someone who's never met a human being before, these are not difficult deductions to make.

The whole tenor of the conversation here has been bizarre. It truly is cult like… You're all waiting for some mysterious piece of information to emerge, when the reality is there is no justifiable explanation for benching Butler the entire game.

What's difficult to sort out is why Belichick, for the first time all year, wanted to use four safeties in his dime defense.

It was the collective failure of that unit, and the Eagles' extreme success on third down, that ultimately doomed the Patriots.
