Allen played 39 snaps (61%) in the AFCCG. He made not one, not two, but THREE key blocks on the Lewis run that sealed the win for the Pats. There was extensive video analysis of that play and Allen's overall play in that game posted in several spots during the week after the game.

Again, the Pats pretty clearly chose to essentially abandon 2TE sets for both the AFCCG and the SB, most likely for strategic gameplan reasons.

Whenever people start using lazy shortcuts (i.e. stats) to judge the impact a player has had it is almost pointless to have a real football level discussion with them. Which is why the discussions about FA and the draft itself inside the draft board usually are on a much higher level than in here.

The aspect that's being ignored here is the ability of players to develop and improve from season-to-season and over the course of a season.

Van Noy was with the Pats for only 7 games in 2016 after the mid-season trade. While his total snaps with the Pats do represent only 24% of the Pats total defensive snaps for the 2016 season, he actually averaged 60% of the defensive snaps for those 7 games - around 80% in weeks 13, 15 & 16. In his first full season with the Pats in 2017, he's improved significantly. He averaged over 90% of the defensive snaps even when Hightower was healthy and on the field during weeks 4 thru 7.

And, despite what almost everyone seems to think, Roberts - in only his second NFL season - also improved over the course of 2017.

Im not sure thats being ignored, I think everybody knows about and hopes for progression between years 1-2, 2-3. Roberts after two years has gotten marginally better. He's more or less the same limited 2 down player he was in his rookie year and Im not sure thats going to change. Again both of these players have roles here but I think they've had to take on expanded roles because of the depth chart we've had at LB. I don't think its a particularly fast group or even particularly versatile for todays NFL standards.

Marquis Flowers, who had played a grand total of 72 defensive snaps during his first three NFL seasons, played 250 of his 283 snaps on the Pats' defense after the BYE, and produced 27 total tackles and 3.5 sacks in that half-season.

Were any of these three perfect or even consistently very good? Hell, no! But all were definitely trending upward as the season progressed, and all now have much more significant experience to build on in 2018. Folks who only see the negative plays and/or those who pre-emptively and prejudicially and who rank their places on some fanciful depth chart for 2018 based on what they did two seasons ago and/or for their one last game of the 2017 season (against probably the toughest offense they faced all year), simply weren't watching how these guys actually played over the course of the entire season closely enough.

Again, why was Flowers seeing so much time after the bye? Its almost like...He got...pushed up the depth chart to take on a bigger roles with injuries.

Sure, Hightower is very likely to return for 2018. Assuming that the Pats are able to re-sign Flowers, it's not at all clear what his specific role may be.

McClellin's health status is completely unknown at this point. All we have are rumors and speculation about what his injury was. Even if he's healthy enough to participate in the 2018 off-season, his roster spot is far from guaranteed now.

Langi showed some potential last pre-season, but he played only 6 defensive snaps and 12 ST snaps in the one regular-season game for which he was active - after which he was a healthy scratch for the three games before his unfortunate auto accident. Even assuming he's completely recovered, he's got a major hill to climb to carve out a defensive role for himself - or possibly even a roster spot. The same thing applies to Rivers.

Will all of Van Noy, Roberts and Flowers continue to trend upward through the 2018 off-season and Camp? We shall see. Or, at least some of us will.

These sorts of progressions aren't necessarily clean lines trending upwards or downwards. There is a reason Belichick talks about getting an opportunity and running with it. Roberts isn't going to loosen his hips in his second seasons. He won't gain proprioception to move in space down the field. Thats not who he is. Its not who KVN is or Hightower for that matter.

I think they will develop a linebacker who is more comfortable carrying guys up the field and quicker into the flat. I also think he adds a more explosive linebacker who can do the aforementioned better than the guys he has and can come off the edge or get home coming up the middle.

Niners resign Cascius Marsh to 2 year extension who say they love his pass rush and enthusiasium we could of used both of those in the Superbowl.
He could rush the passer but we tried to put him in coverage

If the Broncos release Demaryious Thomas should we pounce?
I say yes

He also couldn’t set the edge for crap so what we gain in pass rush we lose in other areas.

He has deteriorated since then. Guy can’t catch half of the time, so no thanks
May come cheaper and come on he still has a good amount in the tank
What is he 29?

Actually, in 2018, Allen is NOT being paid as the 8th best TE in the NFL. He ranks 20th. He's "8th" only in terms of the APY on the full contract that he signed with the Colts in 2016 that includes his signing bonus and his current scheduled 2019 salary ($6.9M).
So now Dwayne Allen is supposedly the 20th best tight end in the NFL. Tell me how did Dwayne Allen do against the Miami Dolphins in week 14 with Rob Gronkowski inactive? Here's a hint, the New England Patriots lost.

It seems you are unwilling to restructure a player's contract to create salary cap space, cut a player to create salary cap space, or even allow a player to depart via unrestricted free agency to create salary cap space. Good luck trying to re-sign Nate Solder with that attitude.

Well we just lost a Super Bowl. If history is any indication, I expect anytime here that we will sign another star CFL player that will get our hopes super high, only to never play a snap for us.
Someone help me out and tell me who I am referencing.

Well, his pass rush wasn't all that and he apparently didn't want to do the other parts of the job that go with being and edge-defender in the Pats system, especially playing contain against the run. Even 39-year-old Harrison was a tremendous upgrade over Marsh in that area and yet he was still more effective at getting pressure.

Other defensive systems are different. If the Niners have a spot for him and his limitations and are willing to pay him to fill it, good for them.
