Can the Patriots use RPO?

I'm not too worried about the Patriots offense. We got 33 in the Super Bowl against a good defense.

Now our defense? I'd prefer for them to learn how to tackle, run, shed blocks, etc. You know, learn how to play football.

These are two different things. An RPO does not require the QB to run. Nick Foles did not run in SB, either. An RPO is just a run play where a WR runs a route, and the QB gets to choose whether to hand-off or throw based on the D.

In the shotgun, it's sort of like a typical play action pass...but the QB really can hand it off. Only difference is that the O-line blocking assignments are run oriented, so the QB has to throw quick; before the O-line is 1 yards past the line of scrimmage.

But when the QB is under center, he just turns and throws. Notice the run blocking and how the back is still expecting the hand-off.

It had its moment at the right moment......a couple of well placed blitzes will shelve it with other gimmicks

Teams are just putting new wrinkles on an old concept because the NFL uses more shotgun these days and are more willing to run out of it, too.

By week 3, referees start calling the OL blocking 3 yards downfield on RPO pass plays for Illegal Man Downfield, ruining it for the rest of the league.

Foles runs just enough to keep the defense honest. Brady doesn’t even do that. They ain’t running the RPO.

I know what the RPO is and they have some plays in there where the QB pulls the ball by design. They could have called more designed runs with Foles (who can, and has, run in the past and does enough to keep the defense honest), but the last line of defense was Sudfeld.

If there's one thing Garoppolo would have been better at, is the ability to do RPO.

But alas, I'm not going there, especially not when I think we couldn't have kept him around anyways.
