Any word on Gronk's status?

Because a lot of the time, the helmet to helmet contact is purely incidental and is a product of the defender having to do their job. There was nothing intentional about Church's hit yesterday. Removing him or other defenders from the game for simply doing their job is ridiculous. You're essentially trying to implement some form of the college targeting rule which has pretty much been a failure in every way you could possibly measure that rule.

Did not have the college game in mind, stand by my belief that if the NFL is serious about doing something about concussions this is an excellent place to start.. make the penalty fit the infraction. Absolutely ludicrous that Church could remain in the game after taking out Gronk, intentional or not.

I do not consider what Church did as his job.. his job was to tackle or defend the pass, not take him out.

@Froob already gave you one part of the answer, which is by itself sufficient reason.

Why is that ridiculous?? Make the penalty fit the infraction, particularly in terms of concussion issues...

15 yard penalty for an offense such as this is absurd and meaningless, if the NFL is serious about doing something about concussions this would be a good first step..

Dorsett takes one of those hits from Malcolm Jenkins and maybeeee he has a bad concussion and can’t return.

He's got 2 weeks, I'm sure he'll e fine. There's no way Gronk misses 2 superbowls in a row.

Unfortunately, it is not his call.. needs to advance 5 steps of recovery.

See Robert Weathers post above..

Not sure what you are getting at here, but if it is about star power the rules should be universal.. if the NFL was serious about concussions they would look at different penalties for creating this trauma....

Because it would become a weapon in the hands of smart coaches. Mediocre offensive skill players would be getting "concussions" whenever hit by star defensive players. As @Froob pointed out. This is done in basketball (and I think hockey, although I don't know that sport) against star players with fragile egos or thin skin. Send in one of your worst players to bait them into a fight, and get both thrown out. And whether they actually did this or not, the controversy it would create would harm the game.

Then you're lost. The safety's job when the receiver is hauling in a pass in his area is to dislodge the ball by any means. Sometimes the only way to do that is with a big hit and incidental helmet to helmet contact is possible when these guys are flying around at the speed of light. You don't punish someone for that just like you don't punish them for big hits that would otherwise injure parts of the body. It's part of the game. The only thing the NFL can really do without totally ruining the quality of the game and leaving a guy's fate in the hands of a subjective review is to remove the concussed individual from the game. They did that.

Look, obviously we won't know anything on Gronk for a few days (at the minimum).

What people could possibly look at is how long others have been out with concussions to get a better feel of expectations.

Now, I have nothing to back this up (so I'm hoping someone with actual support chimes in) but for some reason I'm thinking guys who leave a game due to a concussion usually sit out one game and then are able to return the one after.

I believe Gillmore was an exception in which he sat out a couple weeks, but I think he had another injury as well.

I disagree. Chuch could have very well just pushed Gronk and accoplished the same thing. But we'll never know his intentions becasue he won't say.
Helmet to helmet maybe very well be accidental but if the league wants to stop it to prevent big law suites (they don't care about injuries) they should call everyone and put the offender out of the game. They will soon learn to change how they attack.

Finally a use for Jordan Richards! :D

If they want to stop the headhunting they need to get rid of the air helmets and go back to foam or something like it. It’s the air helmet that allows a defender to knock out the offensive player without injuring himself. All of you who have played the game know what I’m talking about.

I was able to play with both air and foam lined helmets at a time when schools were moving to the new Bike air helmets. It took me two practices to figure out I could knock a guy out with one of the new helmets. Youd never try to hit as hard with a foam helmet because your skull would crack like an egg.

I think Tr'Davious White didn't miss a week. Nor did Devante Adams after this:

Here is my take:

Gronk got hit hard and he was dazed, if he was out on he ground for an extended period of time then I would have been worried about him, but he got up and walked all the way to the locker. Obviously it’s the right call to not bring him back in, we don’t need fines from the league. It’s the right thing to do for Gronk as a human being, I rather lose a game over seeing a player risking his life coming back on the field when they show symptoms of concussion.

The media is gonna go crazy about Gronk until mid week next week. He will be listed questionable just like Brady all the way until SB.

The Boston Herald's Jeff Howe reports the Patriots are "optimistic" Rob Gronkowski (concussion) will be cleared for the Super Bowl.

He'll probably miss this entire week of practice, but I have no fear of him missing the Super Bowl.
