Eric Rowe vs Jonathan Jones

I like Rowe, but thought he still might be hindered by injury from his game performance. The Steelers offense puts much more stress on the secondary, so it is hard to tell if the offense, his injury, or both caused him to have an off day.

The fact that JuJu looked like the flash running around him would cause me to consider Jones.

In the end, the coaches know the player limits and saw them in practice. With such a limited game-time sample size, it is tough to tell if Jones would have done better or worse against that offense.

Last season, Rowe apparently didn't see any snaps until week six (Cinci). He was inactive with an ankle injury for wk-2 and on the injury report/active with the ankle for weeks 3 & 4. Later, he was on the report with a hamstring injury in weeks 14 (no snaps) & 15 (77% of the snaps - at "DB"). That kind of speaks to Rowe's "fragility."

When Rowe was healthy in 2016, especially before the BYE there appeared to be considerable experimenting going on with him and Ryan WRT the nickel/slot role and the RCB role that appeared to eventually more or less settle into Rowe at RCB with Ryan at nickel/slot (either way, they virtually eliminated Coleman from the rotation).

Given his size, if Rowe could tackle better, he might be interesting in an in-the-box safety type role (part-time, game-plan/situation dependent). But that's for the future.

For now, I might prefer to see Gilmore/Butler primariy on the boundaries (with some of that going to JJ on occasion), and JJ as the primary nickel/slot CB (keeping McCourty/Chung/Harmon) as the "Big Nickel" package with Chung playing the slot/TEs/RBs - with Rowe coming on primarily in the dime, plus perhaps some in relief at RCB.

This could vary, though, with Rowe sometimes taking the right boundary (or JJ on the left boundary), thus allowing Gilmore/Butler to shadow someone regardless where they line up.

Bottom line for me is that it's great to have both Rowe and JJ available to be part of the regular mix in the secondary. With those four CBs and the three safeties (at least two of whom can, and do, play cornerback type roles), the available permutations of man, zone and mixed man-zone coverages seem nearly infinite.

BTW - Rowe allowed 4/5 completions in coverage for 106 yards and a TD.

Gilmore allowed 5/7 for 76 yards and a TD.

I mean, in case anyone might be interested.

Because Rowe had a pretty bad game prior to the game-winner. So he only saved himself from being on of the goats on defense.

I don't know, knocking Antonio Brown out of the game and possibly the season probably overshadowed the rest of what he did. Like, it's hard to overstate the impact of taking the best receiver in football out of the game.

ok for those saying Rowe had a bad game, lets see a list of plays where thats the case? back up your claims, etc
@maineman209 beat me to it. Rowe had a god awful game until the final play.

And as much as some people like to give Gilmore **** while Bryant is a borderline psycho he is also a very talented receiver.

I wonder if there is someone who keeps track of matchups for CBs on snap-by-snap level. Maybe PFF...

I agree Eric Rowe has excellent Length for he outside and not inside. When Healthy QB's have the make perfect throws and catch to beat him as we saw in the SB.

Martavis Brayant is not as good as you are making him out to be he has lost alot of snaps to JuJu Smith-Schuster who is a much better and rounded WR. Gilomore is getting paid Elite $$$$ Martavis Brayant would have never run by the Talib and Revis we had the way he ran by Gilmore.

Perhaps you could explain why Rowe's "length" disqualifies him from playing effectively on the inside?

First of all, Bryant didn't "run by" Gilmore. Gilmore lost a step when he turned around to look for the ball too early. That's a misjudgement that I've seen both Talib and Revis make more than once, so your "would have never" isn't even close to reality.

Before you go there I will say it the Talib then and now is better than Gilmore also the 2014 Revis > Gilmore.

Are you drunk ?

Rowe is good. Just fragile

(sorry... 'tis the season... )

I thought Gilmore gave up on the catch by Bryant thinking it would be an incompletion. I was a bit stunned to see that. Carry over of some bad habits from Buffalo? Home grown Patriot players would have played hard right until the ball hit the ground. Watching the game on TV, it irks me quite a bit to watch Gilmore (about the only one) moving around lackadaisically pre-snap. It may not mean anything, just an observation, since my knowledge of the game is purely by watching, having never played a snap.

I am not drunk I just not a BLIND HOMER like some of you.

I don't know what is worse. The number of typos in your posts or just how uninformed and unhinged those posts are.

I've never been particularly impressed by Rowe. I love his size but I remember last season where he lucked on a number of occasions with overthrows and dropped balls.

He was not good on Sunday but he largely obscured his issues with the final deflection. I'd give him a pass though because he has been out for a while. Much more comfortable with Jonathan Jones who has impressed throughout the season.

He didnt gave up on anything, he simply turned and peeked at the QB which is when he lost a step and Bryant made a great falling reception. Not a wise decision but making this about effort is just absurd. Especially when this is something that happens to Butler who some clowns here think is the paragon of effort frequently.

Again, he had the most tackles in the game and was in on some run stops pretty frequently. If you get irked by Gilmore's behaviour presnap then Revis must have been at least as bad for you to watch.
