Patriots prohibited by BB from extending arm w/ball at goal line

Once it breaks the plane - the play is over - TD
One would think that, but as we all should know by now that THAT fact (Breaking the plane) only refers to running the ball in. On pass plays, you have to complete the play "to the ground" even after the ball goes across the plane of the goal

Yes, but the risk of extending it is that they will knock it out before you break then plane. Thus you extend it not at all or as briefly as possible. If it turns out that you didn't extend it far enough, then you live to try again.

Yup, basically Belichick doesn't want us to pull an ASF from earlier this year at the Jets. The priority is to secure possession even at the expense of getting a TD because if the ball is pried loose, only bad things can happen (see ASF and James from this year).

This is for catches specifically I would imagine though because the breaking the plane rule as a runner is not applicable.

Amendola dove for the pylon against Miami last week but was out of bounds and couldnt reach it. Cant remember which quarter it was but he was trying to reach the pylon on the right side of the field and just couldnt turn the corner fast enough.
but was Amendola in the process of catching the ball or was had he already caught it and was running it in. In this case the risk is like in the Carr play where he could lose the ball before it crosses the plane.

BTW- I listened to the GM podcast, and surprisingly Lombardi didn't agree with the official's calls even after seeing numerous replays. I didn't expect that. He also made some very nice comments about JG. It turns out that when Jimmy came out Lombardi was working for the Browns. He was tasked with grading the QB's, and JG was his choice.....and then before the draft he was fired and later came to work with Bill for a year or two. So he got to see Jimmy as a college prospect as well as a developing pro.

BTW-2. It should be noted but won't be, that one of the reasons for JG's success beyond all the obvious ones, is the fact that he primarily sat on the bench for almost 4 years, and had to LEARN his craft. Obviously he learned well.

He was already a runner.

BTW, the Carr play killed Raider Nation. Getting eliminated* from playoff contention like that was painful.

* Not officially eliminated, but effectively dead. Playoff math puts them in the sub-1% chance now.

Chris

I guess we'll never know if Danny was benched after that.

After all the talk from the ASF fumble, I wondered when coaches would start changing how they coach things.

Surprisingly, BB is a *bit* ahead of me...

Then his only risk was losing control of the ball before it crossed the GL, and then go out of bounds.
Or losing control of it before crossing the GL and having it go through the endzone for a touchback. As was the case with ASJ.

My response was to a post about Brady extending on a play starting from inside the one.

If you catch a ball wholly within the EZ and have to “survive the ground”, surely people see the necessity of calling it the same way when catching a ball right at the goal line. The goal line is what is messing people up who think it was a TD. Take the goal line away and nearly everyone would agree it was incomplete (except people who just hate the Pats).

Extending over the plane is dangerous. Take it from me. I got 2 kids now. I bench myself.

He paid for that one though. Ray Lewis slammed him in the back.

This is a running play and he has both hands on the ball in a goal line QB sneak situation. My sense is that BB wants his players to avoid losing control of the ball carrying it in one hand arm outstretched.

Amendola vs Miami last week, vs Ravens in playoffs, Edelman vs Bills. Lombardi talking outta his ass - as usual.
Maybe I'm just noticing it now, but Lombardi has become unbearable.

Stupid things like this only add to the hysteria over the non-call:

Apparently, if people in a restaurant or bar think it's a catch, it should be a catch:

I think Brady did it on a QB sneak where he jumped over the line. I want to say it was against Baltimore, but not sure. I may be hallucinating.

Regards,
Chris
But on that play he would be a running back who already has possession of the ball.

The rule..........

What about if they're down by 4 in the Super Bowl and it's the last play of the game?

Then the player has to sit out the first 30 minutes of the party.

All Super Squirrel needs is a cape and permission from BB

Rubbish. Our players have extended themselves before at the goal line. He must have bad memory of just want to make a point. BB knows the rules better than anyone so it’s more likely he teaches to not extend during a catch but once you establish yourself as a runner then by all mean try to score. Heck I think Dola tried reaching for it during the game but stepped out of bounds.

Edelman was not a receiver in the process of making a catch.
He was a runner trying to brake the endzone plane.
When you catch the ball falling, just tuck the ball in and complete the catch by surviving the ground.
If nobody touches you after that, you can get up and become a runner.
