The cool back end to that story is that after Mason retired he went into high school coaching. Guess what Mason thought that he needed? He asked Bill Belichick if he could attend a Patriots practice to learn some of the finer points about coaching a team, things that might even apply to teaching high schoolers. Bill was of course very happy to help him out.

edit, My bad... The Derek Mason who coaches Vanderbilt now and who picked BB's mind is a different person than Derrick Mason the Ravens player.
