Gronkowski Likely Facing Penalty From NFL After Hit On Sunday

i need to see what he did before he launched.....i remember him looking around for a flag......where was he looking when white was touched by another offensive player? there was no whistle, was he busy looking for the flag when he was touched? did he realize he was down?

granted, a simple hand to the back would have downed him, even if he didn't see the big white line

looking at his post game interview, and the 'its crazy, man'....it really looks like the kid really had no clue what all went down......he looked around, no flag, what the ****, he has the ball, i need to down him.....and like a dipshit piled on instead of just touching him.....unfortunately that **** flies in the basement wrestling with glenn and dan, but not here.....it sounds like making excuses, but ****, it's gronk......after watching and listening to him for so many years, he's a very large man-child who can ball, but beyond that i think much goes over his head lol

who knows.....he could be a raging ******* like burfict with a clear intent to injure.....but i don't see it

Burfict's hits and rolling ankles is not in retaliation rather to injure key players. Gronk retaliated out of frustration.

Yea I dunna know if it was premeditated or not but overall I think Gronk reaches this level of nastiness and agressive behavior that he sees in his world as normal. Growing up with brothers that he fought with, football...its just his world.

I dont think there is an evil bone in Gronk's body but there a fuse in him that if someone is egging him on, he will lay down some hurt.

Well here's a giphy. It doesn't look good either way. It's in slow motion.

You're right though. He hit his head.

Talk about defenseless player.... man... I think we all might be surprised by how tough this will be. Gronk was stoppped too.. than ran and dove hard. I think he could get dinged the final 4. Not impossible.

Well that would not be consistent with the league's other punishments for similar incidents.

But whatever happens Gronk opened the door for the league to punish him as they wish.

yeah, he lands on his head......but i'm not ready to go full bore mediot like some of the tweet-monsters and say he targeted his head or lowered his shoulder into his head....
Yes, this is why I've been carefully wording my comments in the various Gronk threads today.

he didn't target the head... but he targeted the player and hit the head. Your mileage may vary but to me, that's bad enough to be going on with.

and my point is it isn't Alonso bad, where the intent to target the head was clear and brutal

The intent to target was clear and brutal though. I don't think Gronkowski was body slamming White to congratulate him for his excellent play, do you?

At a certain point intent doesn't actually matter. He intended to hit White because otherwise he would not have reversed direction and piled on top of him, And in the process of doing so he landed with a lot of his considerable weight coming down on White's head. If he was or was not deliberately targeting White's head per se, he clearly targeted White, and clearly hit his head. Personally I see no slack to be cut here.

I love Gronk but what he did is unacceptable. Turn the jerseys around and ask yourself what we'd be saying if that was McCourty, Butler, or any other defensive player on the Pats getting concussed with the same cheap shot from a player like Gronk. A massive, high energy, beast of a human being who's 6'7 or so and 270ish pounds. We'd be irate, and we'd demand a lifetime ban from the league (I'm exaggerating here). The point is, that stuff can't, and shouldn't happen. Players can get seriously hurt. That being said, Gronk isn't known to be a dirty player. An animal who plays to the fullest yes (I mean this as a compliment), but not a cheap shot kind of guy. If the league gave him a game I'd be a little surprised only cuz I believe this is his first offense like this, but it wouldn't be uncalled for. I expect a steep fine though.
We need to brace for impact.. it won’t be just one game..

ha i just lost two paragraphs of response......this site has gotten really wonky all of the sudden

gronk seems to be a full bore whistle to whistle kind of guy, who smashes and expects to be smashed, but wants everyone to get up after, and will help pick ya up once he's done with you......he can get intense, and is protective of his teammates, but doesn't seem to be a nasty, intent to injure kind of guy

i suspect this hit was somewhere in between a pissed off/frustrated gronk who wanted to hit the guy who just got over on him and a gronk who is pissed/frustrated at the lack of calls and sees a guy on the ground with the ball, and jumped on him instead of downing him with a hand......not sure where in between without speaking with the kid, but he doesn't strike me as a Burfict or even a Hannah type

that being said, he hit another player after the whistle......he got flagged, and in a perfect world that would warrant a fine.....unfortunately the NFL punishment system is about as flawed as one can get, so who knows

No, it wasn't after the whistle.

There have not really been incidents similar to this one.. if White were hurt bad enough I would expect criminal charges. It was assault and battery, separate from football, cause TBI. Gronk is a bit lucky right now.

do you know his intent was to jump on white because he was angry? or do you know if he jumped on him because he was pissed and thought the play was still live and he was angry enough to jump on him rather than just down him with a hand?

all we really know is he jumped on a player that was down, and there was no whistle.....the punishement for a late hit tends to be 15 yards....in this case the player was injured, so the only real debate is fine vs minimal suspension

No, it wasn't after the whistle.

yeah, i know......was retyping my response and worded it wrong

he hit a player who had been downed (again, i want to see if he was even lookingwhen that happened), and that's a penalty

Not sure if he saw Dorsett down the player but I don't think that matters.

i think it does, a little

if he knew he was downed and still jumped on, that ups the intent a little

if he just turned around and saw him with the ball and jumped on to down him, it still makes it a foul (because he clearly could have downed him with a touch), but potentially ratchets the intent down a little

i'm giving him a pass on the oob part of scenario two, because, well, dorsett still downed him, too

scenario A is jumping on white because white just pissed him off, even though he was already downed....intent is clear, **** this guy

in my mind that is worse than scenario B - i need to down this player and i'm going to jump on rather than down him like a gentleman......dual intent, i need to down him, but i'm not going to make it nice, because, well, **** this guy

scenario A is what brings us into fine/suspension territory, imho

scenario B is dealt with via a flag (although potential injury clouds it a little more)

we're clearly arguing minutiae here, because what else is there to argue on a monday morning after your teams 15th straight season with 10 wins or more, after they've won their 8th straight, after the defense just went with their 8th straight holding an opponent under 20, yadda yadda yadda

Yeah I don't know Yukon. We'll see I guess.

within a couple of hours

in a perfect world i'd have to think these are the things the league takes in....i know in the past they have talked to players before handing out punishment, and of course in the appeals process

the cynic in me says the conversations look more at who, what team, and public perception, but....

plus it was a slow work day

It will be one game and a fine. Anything more than that will be a travesty and it will show that the league has it out for the pats!

Now I see Max Kellerman's piling on Gronk. How I wish Gronk would body-slam that hemorrhoid.
