Does anyone here have any real information about how other teams do with their low draft picks and UDFA's? Without that, there's no ground to stand on in evaluating how this team is doing. Do the Pats really whiff on more of them than other teams do?

The Patriots have the lowest draft picks and greatest success of any team. Probably because they don't care about what posters think about acquisitions and just keep turning over the bottom of the roster until they get performance.

Cracks me up how people worry about Coleman doing well for Seattle. Maybe we should have kept him and installed Seattle's defense.

The last theee years our pre and during season trades were hitting ridiculously well this year they're worse than average

The context of what the team needs, and of specific players are available to fill what roles on the team, varies dramatically from year-to-year, so inconsistency is to be expected.

This may not be BB's perspective within the context of his own scouting of the 2018 draft class.

I think Marsh had cat like quickness but also had cat like edge discipline.

Marsh is actually a couple inches taller than Nink and about the same weight. Perhaps he just "played smaller."

What's the difference between a #7 and the hoard of free agents that Belichick signs every year? Virtually nothing.

Yep, 7th-round picks (and even 6th rounders) are mostly a way to sign a likely UDFA without having to deal with the post-draft scrum.

Reiss tweeted a few clips of Lee v. the Pats in the 2016 pre-season game against the Texans after their week of joint practices. The Pat have had a very close look at him.

We played our best defensive game on Sunday, I wonder if it was a coincidence that Marsh only played two snaps

IIRC, it was on one of those two snaps that Lynch was able to get around the edge for a 25-yard gain.

So much potential there ..

At least we get to keep Bademosi.. and all the Malco(l)ms of course..

Id temper expectations here. quickly re-watched the game yesterday. PS material. unless he developed dramatically in BUF Id be surprised if he plays. He does have some football blood and does understand assignments though incl. setting the edge..

OTOH how many players have floundered in other systems only to play well for the Pats; Van Noy, Amendola, Burkhead, Hogan to name a few... wonder if their message boards are whining about the same thing..

Evaluating NFL players is a crap shoot, some guys work out in our system and others do not..

Do you mean Justin Coleman who is starting for them and currently has a better coverage rating than any CB on our roster? Coleman has played excellent for Seattle.

And so the wheel turns.

Last year Coleman showed not to be competent enough to play meaningful snaps here and people were upset that it was Roberts that got cut and not him. This year apparently the mistake is to let Coleman go.

He plays in a different team with a different scheme. That alone makes any comparisons or what if scenarios pointless. Most players can be productive if they find just the right environment. Just because he has improved from being below average to JAG status doesnt mean he would have had the same growth here. Especially after he didnt show any for an entire year + training camp.

Allen, does his job well.. neither win or loss
Dorsett, able blocker, runs routes well and takes coverages upfield when called on, still under cheap contract for a bit.. neither win or loss
Gillislee, better pass protector than Blount, not much difference in terms of running ability, higher upside.. neither win or loss

Ealy, loss but was essentially for free
Marsh, loss

His downfall was really when even his ST snaps got reduced. Once you lose your ST value as a situational DE that cant set the edge you know you are in trouble here.

Agree. Posted the clip so that folks could get a look for themselves.

This feels like an early acquisition of a 2018 off-season roster prospect. If Lee is active and plays well on something other than ST within the next three weeks, I may start believing that BB actually does have magic powers.

Nope, cant say i was. Started being a fan in 1993 at the age of 8. Did live through a couple of 5-11 years.

Calling him an "edge setter" is being exceedingly generous considering he completely sucked at it. He often pushed too far upfield and got caught in overpursuit, leaving wide open running lanes off the edge for RBs and mobile QBs to exploit. I thought they would have given him until the end of the season to figure it out since he played on STs as well, but I guess they've seen enough. That Belichick gave up draft capital for him sucks as well, but it is what it is. Farewell, Cassius of Marsh, first of your name.

Marsh was listed at 245 while Nink was 260. Lee is 260 and appears to be a stronger player than Marsh on tape and more capable of fighting a block. Marsh was faster but still could not generate much heat from the outside. Not sure they have that guy.

Marsh came out of college at 255. Perhaps playing for Carroll caused him to drop some pounds.
