2018 College Watch List: QB's

Here a quick overview of possible Pat fit of top QB prospects from Reiss via McShay FWIW:

While it’s still early, I asked ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay for a quick snapshot of the quarterback class and who he thinks might fit best for New England. Some McShay thoughts:

  • Sam Darnold (USC), Josh Rosen (UCLA) and Josh Allen (Wyoming) are all projected to be off the board by the time the Patriots would pick in the first round. The club would have to move up to select them, which seems unlikely.

  • Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield has “unique leadership, competitive and intangibles” and plays with “a similar fire of Tom Brady.” He is undersized (listed at 6-foot-1), but he is an accurate passer in and out of the pocket and at his best extending plays.

  • Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph has more prototypical size (listed at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds) and is more of a prototypical pocket passer. Some of his most recent performances might have been affected by injury. But based on the system he’s playing in, it would be a big adjustment coming to New England, so the fit would have to be explored.

  • NC State’s Ryan Finley, who is a redshirt junior, is a potential wild card because it is unknown if he will declare for the draft. Listed at 6-foot-4, he has a good arm, but “more importantly, he’s a really poised pocket passer with good touch and timing who keeps getting better with game reps.”

  • Washington State’s Luke Falk and Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, who project as two more parts of what makes it a strong quarterback class, didn’t come up, but that could always change in time, while others also could emerge.

Rudolf is likely to go way before Pats can join the party.
Doubt it, he's not a big arm and from a QB friendly system. I don't think he'll go in the first round, to the Patriots or anyone else.

Mayfield’s ridiculous numbers came against a very athletically weak defense. Not sure we can give him full props for his performance this week.

This was the thing that stuck out to me as well. Receivers were getting so open it was hard to evaluate the both QB's ability to read the defense.

Any reason to be interested in Kenny Hill?

FYI, from Matt Miller, one of the better draft guys on whether Mayfield would go high in the first round. Have to remember he's short, plays against bad defenses and has off field issues. I still like him but he's not some guy who's out of reach for us at all.

Agreed on Mayfield, less on Miller. He didn't have a single QB going top 12 last year. As we know now 3 were picked by that time. To his credit he was not the only delusional “expert“ and keeps his 2017 board visible..

As far as “scout sources“ go, they will never say what they really feel about prospects they really want (or they will say the opposite) bc they feel media affects draft stock..

if Finley declares, he is the exact model qb our system needs.

I like Finley but I wonder about his mental toughness. Watched him last two games and I had a bit of Matt Ryan feeling. Choke would probably be too strong but he certainly didn't grab the opportunity to show he is a winner..

Yup, and the way to get a potential franchise QB outside the first round is a market inefficiency:

2012 Wilson - Height
2014 Carr - offensive system
2014 Garoppolo - FCS, offensive system
2016 Prescott - ??? His team was bad ??? (More of a 1/100 find)

Mayfield has the short accuracy, release & mobility of a franchise QB. If his height & offensive system make him fall to RDs 2-3 we need to take the chance. He’ll probably be in my mocks in the spring. His whole draft stock reminds me of Jimmy G & they seem to be similar prospects. We obviously won’t be landing a top 3 pick franchise QB as long as Brady is here so we’ll need to find a gem with some warts.

What does it say about this draft class, that is supposedly strong in qb’s that teams like Cleveland and San Fran, would rather trade for veterans?

Someone will overspend on cousins this offseason, but I would still rather use draft capital than sign a veteran this offseason.
I doubt they will sign another veteran QB unless they really hate what they see out of Hoyer. I assume they were more okay trading Jimmy because they like some of the guys in this coming draft but who knows

I really do not think Mayfield will fall that far.

Mayfield is tough to figure out. I don't think he's a total headcase like Manziel, but he does display some troubling tendencies. Is his poor judgement just immaturity and poor taste that he'll grow out of, or is it indicative of more deep-seated problems? While his on-field play is spectacular (if a bit unorthodox), the lingering character questions have mostly removed him from my draft board. He has been my #1 guy this year, but I just can't get past his continued lapses in behavior.

Yep. Id be very surprised if BB and NC had him on the board. Of 10 QBs BB drafted for Pats Garoppolo was (among) the shortest and he is 2 inches above BM. The off-field extravaganza is certainly not helping..

The process of finding Pats next QB will be quite intriguing now. The clock is ticking on most key “players“ of recent NE success, not only Brady (BB, coaches..). Most people now expect it will go through draft, even this years' . but would it really be shocking if they'd go other ways like being aggressive in FA (it could be crazy QB market next year(s)). I wouldn't be shocked if one of Brissett, JG finds his way back when Tom is ready to go. The only thing that would surprise me is if they would not be aggressive about it on all fronts and leave it to uncertainty and luck (pun not intended..) . or just inexperienced draft prospects like DEN..

Mayfield has a family that teams might not love dealing with.
*Edit* was on lunch. Mostly father who played football at Houston. Maybe not as outspoken and out there as Baker but he's not afraid to add his 2 cents.

He's better than Jonny coming out and prob what everyone wanted J.M. to be but neither were/are 1st guys for me.

The kid from miss state looks like a guy we need to investigate.

Decent accuracy and makes nice throws. He would work better in our offense than the crappy one miss state uses.

Fearless . That's #1 quality Im looking for in combination w tough and smart.
Can't change/coach character..

Id rather loose w f.e. Keenum than win w Ryan..

Courage is so important in this game, I think bb does a great job of finding guys with high courage.

Finley from NC State is a high courage guy with tremendous accuracy.

Fitzgerald, the qb from miss state may have suffered a gruesome leg injury in his last game.

Very sad for the kid!
