Belichick may pay a little more to get Landry he did it with Welker.

Slightly different situation though. Welker was a restricted FA with a 2nd round tender; they effectively negotiated a sign-and-trade with Miami where the Pats threw in a 7th rounder ostensibly as a sign of good faith (avoiding a poison pill which was still allowed back then).

Here, Landry is scheduled to be a UFA after this season. That impacts the compensation as the Patriots won't know if they can resign him after the season. I'd be surprised if they went higher than a 3rd; they only paid a 4th for Talib who was in a similar situation (Talib had more baggage though).

I'll tell you this though, I'm convinced he'll be the Patriots #1 offseason target if he makes it to the open market.

I just think if we had another good pass rusher, it would help our out defense so much....More 3 and out's is what I'm talking about and putting the opposing qb on their back!!!!!!!!!

Sacks don't mean much if the opposing QB is still able to get 1st downs. The Pats have the ability to get pressure on the QB currently. The problem is that they don't get enough rotation because they are having Flowers do double duty so much. I love Flowers, but he's gassed by the end of games because he's playing like 95% of the defensive snaps.

Having another good pass rusher would help most teams. Not saying it wouldn't. I just don't know that its a bigger need than having someone who can help inside. Something tells me that BB wants to move back to a 3-4 (with Flowers, Wise, Van Noy, and Marsh being OLBs) and Harris / Roberts as the ILBs..

With the potential return of McClellin and Valentine, the issues would seem to be taken care of. So who knows..

ESPN's Josina Anderson reports the Dolphins have told Jarvis Landry he will not be traded.

This contradicts an earlier report which had the Dolphins shopping Landry, although it is possible Miami is still fielding offers despite telling Landry he would not be moved.

Me? I have no clue. Clearly the Patriots offense is very complex, and it takes a certain type of person to be able to quickly master it - someone who understands the absolute fundamental concepts to the nth degree so he doesn't have to "memorize" anything, he just knows.

So do any of those three guys have that innate ability (combined with the football-obsessive passion the Patriots look for)? That's the question I don't know the answer to. Personally, I think the Patriots need more of a Landry or Hilton type at this point than Bryant. Hilton's contract would be very hard to fit right now -- is due about $4M for the remainder of the season, which leaves the Patriots with no wiggle room. So given that I'd go with Landry, but I'd need to understand the football schematics IQ question better at this point. For example I was skeptical about the Randy Moss trade (thought it was worth the price, just wasn't counting on him being a smashing success) because I didn't think his football schematics IQ was as high as it turned out to be.

Telling Landry he won't be traded and telling Landry they don't want to trade him are two different things. Won't be traded still means they could have been open to it if they got a good enough deal.
