Belichick may pay a little more to get Landry he did it with Welker.
Slightly different situation though. Welker was a restricted FA with a 2nd round tender; they effectively negotiated a sign-and-trade with Miami where the Pats threw in a 7th rounder ostensibly as a sign of good faith (avoiding a poison pill which was still allowed back then).
Here, Landry is scheduled to be a UFA after this season. That impacts the compensation as the Patriots won't know if they can resign him after the season. I'd be surprised if they went higher than a 3rd; they only paid a 4th for Talib who was in a similar situation (Talib had more baggage though).
I'll tell you this though, I'm convinced he'll be the Patriots #1 offseason target if he makes it to the open market.
