Incredibly important week for the Patriots

I don't know if we realize how important the time between the Bucs game and Jets game is.

Patriots get the longest time off they will have between now and their bye week and get to face a horrible Jets team. It is a great time to take stock. Coach up things and focus on installing and working on communication. It helps especially with how bad the Jets are.

Yes the Jets are 3-2 but they are clearly a fraud 3-2 team. They beat the equally bad Jags and Browns (Yes the Jags are 3-2 but that is another fraud 3-2 team IMO). The only QB who is even above average the Jet's faced was Carr and he blew their doors off. The rest include some of the worst QBs in the NFL. In fact the 3 wins they have are against the 3 worse statistical QBs in the NFL right now for starters. This team could be and under normal circumstances would be 1-4 right now. The point is even with a winning record it is okay to say the Jets suck and are one of the worst NFL teams. Water just has yet to seek its level on them.

This gives the Pats a lot of breathing room. Thursday to Sunday. Then what should be a routine win over a bad team. Then Sunday night vs the dangerous Falcons and the start of the tough stretch of games.

This is a key time for the team. It made some positive strides in the Bucs game and now it gets 10 days off to prepare for the lowly Jets. Then the really tough games start. If the Pats are to show the improvement we hope this is the time I would expect to see a lot and then hopefully more post-bye week.

We are being a bit dramatic. Sure, we need the early mini-bye for players to get healthy, and to continue to develop better as offensive and defensive unit. The team will do this again when we have our longer bye ion a few weeks.

As far as needing 10 days to take stock, Belichick has never needed extra time. He does that each week, as one can see from his very large number of transactions.

But yes, the staff will benefit from having extra time to evaluate new players, including those at the top of the Practice Squad.

I am hoping and praying they blow the doors of the Jets, but this year is so unpredictable. Honestly, this year is down right goofy. Long way to go but if the Pats are not in it, I am hoping for a Chiefs-Eagles Superbowl.

Sometimes I wonder if the best benefit to this extra time off isn't getting healthy, or extra film study, or extra reps, or any of that. But more about, "Okay, let's reset." I have to imagine it helps to take a step back, breathe, and refocus. I wonder the opposite when a team is red hot going into a bye week. Does the extra time hurt their momentum?

Yes but that is film and training time and many players go to the stadium even on off days. "Off day" in the NFL is generally not usually fully off. Except bye weeks for a time.

These are done in practice. There are literally no extra practices. They had the weekend off.

I could make a case that the Patriots are a fraud 3-2 team as well. If a few plays went the other way this season, the Pats could be 1-4.

I would imagine there is some film study. I would imagine coaches are watching film and pondering game plan issues.
But they don't practice. They get the time off to recover from playing twice in 4 days.
My point is it's wrong to suggest there is extra time to work in issues in practice, which many have suggested over the last couple weeks.
That said, this staff can accomplish a lot in a normal week.

Both the AFC South and North are not going to produce a team with more than 10 wins (I wouldn't be shocked if neither produced more than a 9 game winner but to be conservative...). Nobody else in the AFCE will win more than 9 and really once it settles none of them will probably win 8 games. So they basically have the entire season to get it right on both sides of the ball while still getting a bye. Then you hope KC gets knocked off or worst case you go there and have to win much like Pitt 2004 when the Pats got trucked in the regular season.

The only pitfall to the above is if the OL keeps getting Brady murdered he might not make it that far or be so beat up he can't perform at his usual level. That's the highest priority.

A little early in the season to call a game against the lowly Jets a must win.

That said if the Pats lose to the Jets (unlikely) or if they allow the Jets to hang with them and eek out a win, that will speak volumes on the state of the Pats.
