How confident are you that Brissett makes the roster this year

unless we have a few injuries to key players that results in needing a roster spot, i dont see the team cutting JB, not when they can keep him and have him be the third emergancy QB each week.

I agree he will not make it to the PS as other teams would think he's had a great year of finishing school learning from Brady, McDaniel and Belichick.

If he has to go I would rather put him on IR with a hangnail.

As an important aside here, the Belichick-era Patriots have frequently entered the regular season with a rookie at QB2 (Garoppolo in 2014 most recently), but they have never entered training camp with a rookie at QB2.

Nice info, but I'm not quite sure why you consider it IMPORTANT, particularly in 2017? (Honest query -not a slam.)

1. Neither JAG nor Brisket are rookies this year. I don't hear anyone suggesting BB would unload both and pick up an UDFA QB before game 1.

2. For 2018:

A. If either JAG or Brisket were traded this year and the god-awful injury or retirement happened to TB before next season -BB would still have plenty of offseason to pick up a street FA #2 in addition to a draft choice to be developmental QB #3 ).

B. For BB, rules were made to be broken when necessary. If for some reason he gave up one (JAG/JB) and then lost TB for 2018 and the draftee outshined the street FA in OTAs, I don't think he would have a problem listing the rookie as #2 [or even #1 if he was that talented in open competition] (that is of course, if you could actually talk him into filling out his depth chart and making it public before final cut downs - - Good Luck with that ;) ).

So, did I miss something as to why that is important???

I think they'll give him another year, but he hasn't improved at all. His pocket presence is still suspect and he's still putting way too much velocity on his short throws. His mechanics also need a TON of work. I honestly had no clue what the team saw him him when they drafted him and still don't. But I think he makes the roster again this season.

I think he's fine for this season barring something crazy behind the scenes we haven't heard about. Yeah he's a project, but that's OK for your QB3. 99.99% of the time nobody has third string QB that's anything but awful.

Seems like bb kind of took parcels word when he vouched for him. Parcels vouched for the wrong guy, Prescott should have been the pick.

Brissett simply cannot throw the ball like an NFL caliber QB, he has no accuracy.

My point was about 2018, and I was just trying to note there is no circumstance in which Belichick will rely on a rookie at QB2 to start camp.

It is also possible that Belichick is planning/expecting to trade JAG at some point this season and therefore needs Brisket on the 53.

Crazy talk.
Brady is 40. If he gets say a slow to heal rib injury or a heaven forbid concussion and misses ~2 games, then JAG is our guy. We're in decent shape.
But who backs HIM up? It's not like JAG has an iron man NFL record.
Look at his roll outs throwing on the run. Can take some big hits that way.
Bisquick has shown he will play the way the coaches ask him to play as an emergency 3rd.

It is possible.
Extremely unlikely as JAG is excellent insurance for a playoff injured TFB. Tom missed 3/4ths of the Squealer playoff game in his 1st SB season. I'd want JAG out there if Tom were to miss a game or part of one. Worth as insurance >> draft pick(s)

Last year Brissett was backing up Jimmy for first 4 games. Things are different now.
and yet for some reason they brought him back from IR in December.

Never happen.

Brisset came with the recommendation from Parcells. BB wont throw in the towel on Briset 2 years in.

Ryan "thin man" Malllet and Rohan Davey were here a long time.
Rohan "not so thin man" Davey :D

I have been disappointed in the lack of progress from JB. I was hoping that his mechanics would improve, addressing both his 'touch' and accuracy. I am OK with the slow reads in his progressions that takes time for most QB's, Brady being the exception, JG was slow in his reads year 2 also.

HE really needs to go to someone like Tom House to improve his mechanics. He has the leadership skills to be very good.

I do know what the team sees in Brissett. They see a good mind with very faulty mechanics. Brissett's calling card has always been poise and courage in the clutch, which is the same thing the team saw in Brady. The difference is that Brissett is a completely different style of quarterback and that style might not work in the NFL. A run and gun quarterback has to run and gun really really well in order to survive, and Brissett's only pretty good at it. But what he does seem to be very good at, especially for a rookie, is keeping his head and continuing to play well under pressure.

He played the game mentally very well in the games he played, did not make a lot of mistakes that were not down to his scattershot accuracy. He took good care of the football and he showed poise and courage in the pocket. If they can fix the mechanical issues (which is a longshot, but possible), Brissett could wind up very good. If they can't -- ehh. It was worth the gamble to see what he could do.

I get the impression that if nothing else, Brissett will stay with the team because BB wants to reserve his right to trade Garoppolo in midseason if the right deal comes up, without having Julian Edelman become the #2 QB. That doesn't mean he will trade Garoppolo, but if keeping Brissett keeps his options open and give him room to maneuver, BB will keep Brissett.

If you read those recommendations, they're all about character and leadership. Not much about mechanics or accuracy throwing the ball.

Think it through. Next year you need a back up QB. Whether the starter is Brady or Garoppolo. (Yeah, I've heard the Brady AND Garoppolo ideas.) BTW, no one is 100%. Maybe 99.998%:)

Kinda near topic: why does JB (and to some extent JG) throw the football like a shot put? Brady throws it with his arm fully extended in a big windmill arc above his head. I would think the guys training with the GOAT would emulate his mechanics/throwing style.

Come On Man!
PatsFans.com edition.

So far in voting 15/60 votes, a quarter of the participants, voted 50% or 70%, so that doesn't make the thread utterly ridiculous as you imply.

No disrespect to the OP at all but this is another thread that, imo, is two weeks premature.

It's impossible to know JB's value after the first preseason game.

Anyways I will make my judgement after the third preseason game. And even then it will be based on limited analysis.

No disrespect taken. I just wanted to have a discussion on this.

Ofcourse we're speculating, that's the point of the forums. We don't just do post-hoc analysis once all the facts and data are in. What's the fun in that.
