I have never seen the Patriots ever value the back up QB position in the past? Brian Hoyer, Rohan Davey, Ryan Mallet.. if they were offered 1st round picks and then some for those guys I am sure the Patriots would have traded them away.
Tom Brady is 40 years old.
He outlasted the careers of those players.
So Bill passed up on potentially a 1st and a 2nd rounder for the possibility of Brady going down for this up coming season alone? I find that hard to believe.
You have no idea what he "passed up".
You have no idea if he will get just as much next year as was really on the table this year.
He only has this season alone. I'm sure if JAG was under contract for 3 additional years he would keep him for them too.
Not sure why it is so hard to understand that if you think you have a potential heir on your roster and your QB is 40 you keep him around in case. Brady will hit the wall at some point. But BB isn't going to drive him into the wall. If you can have JAG around when that happens great. If not there will be someone else.
What I see is.. JG is the future QB of the Patriots 1 way or the other.
So you are cutting Brady after this year when he plays as well as he did last? You would cut the GOAT after winning 3 of 4 SBs? Ok.
You say if Brady has 3 years left (and thats optimistic imo) then who cares let the cards fall how they will.. and we could go from the best franchise in NFL history to the Miami Dolphins or the Detroit Lions.. or the NY Jets.. If Bill thinks JG is the real deal, Bill will move on with JG and keep the success going long term.
The cards will fall similarly after Brady is done whether you have JAG or a different QB. They will now fall similarly for the remaining years you have away the GOAT for.
Without a QB you have virtually no chance of success and if you do have any success its for a year or 2 then back to the bottom. Brady has been amazing but his time is short.
And the patriots need to bleed every drop of it they can get.
Brady is a one in a lifetime player.
It's beyond ridiculous to consider dumping him at near the top of his game because you are afraid to lose a guy who may never amount to anything.
In your scenario you cut Brady, we go 6-10 for 3 years then start all over again looking for a new QB. That worked out well.
