Jason McCourty released by Tennessee

Give him Devin's number and have them do a tandem safety blitz: the qb will think he's seeing double and wind up in the concussion protocol, or the booby hatch. (Do they still call it the Booby Hatch, or is that a microaggression?)
Depends on your age.

I still call it the booby hatch.

I also call jail the pokie.

Why not? Rowe played extremely well most of the time,he's young with a great skill set. Butler/Gilmore/Rowe gives you tremendous flexibility as all 3 can really play just about anywhere. Would also be great tho if one or both of the Joneses stepped up.

It would be nice that Eric Rowe with a full offseason under his belt proves to emerge by the end of next season as a dominant corner and a DB versatile enough to fit with all Patricia schemes. I'm just hoping the rest of the depth chart will be good enough to split playing time and "steal" Eric 51% of his potential regular season's defensive snaps. But if somehow Rowe exceeds all expectations and becomes a legit CB#2 for the full next two years, 3rd would still be a good value for him.

Great opportunity for Pats that was long time in the making:

1. J-Mac can still play . (similar to Ryan's production before inj.)
2. His chest injury has no bearing on future performance.
3. Pats don't need him but they can certainly use him:
a. Butler's trade is possible (a natural thing to do IMO - not that I want it)
b. they can use some veteran presence in a young CB group
c. they have a lot of appeal and a lot of leverage to sign him to economy deal:
- fulfilment of twins' long-time wish to play together
- realistic competition for #2CB if Butler is traded
- a chance to finally feel some playoff action

The Q is what is his market since I don't see Pats offering him much guaranteed..
____

EDIT:
BTW - JM release is far from surprise and was projected months ago. The league was ready for this so it should soon be clear what the Pats and others' interest is.

If Pats indeed bring him in it would probably be another sign that they want to trade Butler (for the right price of course - that might be a bit lower than fans expect)

The only thing I would wonder about would be if Devin would shade toward his brother's man in coverage more often than he would if his brother weren't there. It's a brother thing. I always look out for my brothers, as I'm sure Devin does, and it may be almost instinctive to shade his brother's man in coverage. Just a thought...

Nice thought, no worries.

Am I the only one who wants Harmon to get more snaps?

Sorta.
I think he's worth what he's gonna be paid if he maintains his % participation and of course continues to make key plays.
I'll always remember his game clinching pick against Flaccid Flaco in the 2014 season playoffs.

Give up some equity, and get the better player...Sherman is the guy.
Pretty telling that a team with 40+ million of cap space is willing to kick this guy to the curb because of his 7M cap hit (already factored into the 40+).

Sherman is a better player, but by how much?

If we sign McCourty for say $7M vs. Sherman for $11M + 1st/4th round picks required to trade for him, Sherman is a superior player still, but McCourty is the superior value. As we don't have a 1st, it's more than likely that would mean trading Butler at least.

So you can keep Butler and sign McCourty, or have Sherman for both of them basically.

I also hate the argument that Team X has cut this guy so that's pretty telling. Bad teams make bad decisions. Dion Lewis got cut by the Browns. And the Colts. Nobody wanted Edelman for more than the minimum when he was a free agent. The Eagles cut Chung. The Bucs cut Revis back in the day.

Just because a guy is cut by a worse team doesn't mean he can't be a good player for the Patriots.

This is IMHO an important factor. Gilbert, and both Jones', could use a steady senior presence as they work to fulfill their potential. Plus, as I stated earlier, a SB run and win calls for some roster turnover to provide an antidote to the fatigue and complacency that is human nature. And it would give his brother even more incentive to compete hard.

I'm so old, I still call it Bethlem Hospital.

Do you till do the hokey pokey and turn yourself around?

After all, that is what it's all about!

I agree on the "telling" business.

Besides, it's the Titans who don't want him. What does that tell ya? I might put that on the plus side!

Are you really asking this? You just suggested moving him to a position he has never played before. I don't know if he's still a good player, but it makes zero sense to sign a guy to a position he has never played where we have no need.

But, but, but the "twins" angle would make for a great little tidbit for the announcers to pick up on every week...

Nice write-up by Hill here:
Jason McCourty wants to play with his brother, Patriots FS Devin McCourty

The letter he is mentioning is dated Jan 8th 2015 but sure reads as a perfect resignation/application letter in current situation:
The McCourty Twins: Jason on watching brother Devin in NFL playoffs | The MMQB with Peter King

Now lets see how much truth there is in some of this quotes
(assuming Pats are interested):

If I imagined my life at age 27, there’s not much more I could ask for.
So I hope what I’m about to say doesn’t come across as ungrateful, or even greedy. But there is one void in my life, one thing that eats at me, that occupies my mind, that irks me to no end. I’ve never been to the NFL playoffs. And it sucks.
January is always the hardest. When my season ended, I flew up to Foxborough to hang out with my twin brother, Devin. He plays for the Patriots, and let’s just say they’re usually playing at this time of year.
.
Look, I’m extremely happy for Devin .. But every year, a part of me simmers with envy .. Those smiles, that feeling—I wanted to experience that, too .. I hate the fact that only once have I played in a Week 16 game that mattered .. A lot of people think athletes are only in it for the money, but when you play this sport, you play to win .. Those who become truly successful, those who are remembered as great? They win ..
To put in that much work and get nothing, well it makes you so much hungrier. I think it’s important, no matter your profession, to never become complacent and always strive for greatness.

If Jason didn't have a brother on the team, I suspect that there would be little interest.

We have Gilmore, Butler and Rowe. We also have Coleman, Jones and Jones. If Jason were one of the best nickel backs in the NFL, I could see the interest. Otherwise, I can't see paying serious money for a backup.

funny!

I suspect that we'll know by Draft Weekend whether we are going into the season with Butler or Sherman or a 1st (or 2nd) round draft choice.

Rowe is still unproven, Coleman sucks, Cy Jones is a bust, and Jonny Jones is just a ST gunner…and nobody is suggesting paying serious money to JMac. If +/- $3M doesn't get a deal done, then good luck to him.

Really?

Dude people have been posting threads about this or that cornerback literally all offseason. Perhaps we wouldn't have as much interest in Jason specifically if not for Devin, but you bet your bottom dollar there is some interest around here in any decent CB who's available for nothing but money, especially in light of the still unresolved situation with Butler.
