Happy Birthday to The Duke, Gino Cappelletti - Mr. Patriot

John Morgan

Happy Birthday to The Duke, Gino Cappelletti. Mr. Patriot turns 83, born on this day in 1934 in Keewatin Minnesota. With all due respect to the GOAT, nobody embodies the entire history of the Patriot franchise more than this legend. His absence from the Pro Football Hall of Fame is shameful, something that will hopefully be rectified before it is too late for him to be honored in person.

Yep, I still miss him as part of the radio team. (I always listen to the radio feed when I watch the games.) Socci and Zo are better, by any rational standard, but the sound of Gil and Gino bumbling through a game had just become the sound of Patriots football to my ears. The only radio broadcast I remember with more fondness was Bob Wilson doing the Bruins.

The abject stupidity and ignorance of Gino not being in the NFL HOF is exceeded only by Julius Adams' absence from the Patriots' HOF.

While it is true that Socci & Zolak now are better than Gil & Geno just before they retired, it is also true than Socci & Zolak are not worthy to polish the microphones of Gil & Geno in their primes.

And you again speak the truth regarding Bob Wilson, who is simply the greatest radio play-by-play broadcaster, in any sport, I have ever heard in my lifetime, the
legendary uniqueness of Johnny Most notwithstanding.

I agree with this. Gil and Geno in their prime, even up to a year or two before they left, were my favorites. I was extolling Socci/Zolak more in comparison to the various guys on TV, what little of it I remember hearing. Collingsworth seemed to know a lot, but was kind of a smirking dink and got on my nerves in pretty short order. Other than that they all seemed interchangeable to me.

Bob Wilson is my favorite play-by-play guy of all time. It probably helped that he got to announce for such a truly great team.

You have to love Most, though, because it shows that you can do a job in a REALLY weird way and still make it work, That's encouraging if you're a little inclined to the oddball side, as I am!
