All quiet on Hightower front or Dont'a-do-it FA tour

Count me in as someone that thinks he really is looking to leave town. Whether its the Collins trade or whatever. Don't get the warm and fuzzies. Mind you, not many are showing and love.

Reminds me of Wilfork's free agency. People forget how quickly a guy can go from consummate team player to free agent engaged in a public negotiation and right back to the former as soon as an agreement is reached. Maybe he's going to pull a Welker, maybe he's going to pull a Wilfork. Can't really know, but the fact that everyone who's had him in for a visit is convinced he's coming back here should probably carry some weight.

I don't think Wilfork ever hit the market but yeah things got heated. Wilfork legit got screwed though on an outrageously long six year rookie deal that is now not even allowed.

Just thought of something: HIghtower should be very careful about signing with the Jets. First off, he'd be playing for the Jets, but second...

tough to be an NFL linebacker with the nickname "Cupcake."

I think it's possible, and I'd be concerned about signing a guy whose heart isn't in it.

I thought about that but Hightower doesn't cross me as a guy who would half ass it on the field while his teammates are trying to go all out.

Or maybe Hightower has more discipline, emotional maturity, and less neediness than the other players who sign immediately after having big numbers thrown in their face.

"Extended" isn't defined by other people's behavior. If I go to the food and beverage section of the movie theater, and spend some time pondering the offerings and thinking about what I want, does that make me somehow lesser than all those who walk right up and buy something?

It does not. But if you then get out your cell phone and start calling around competitor movie theaters to ask about the prices of their concessions, and after the first two tell you their prices are similar, you then start calling several more, I am in serious doubt that will be buying anything at the original movie theater.

I can't possibly be the only person who keeps seeing this title as

No, you're not. All along the Watch(for what Dont'a will do)tower. Been in my head too.

I'm curious to know what makes other teams convinced he's returning to NE?

If Hightower was dead set on leaving, the Pats would have been informed before FA and they would have moved on and been talking to other ILBs.

He need's to look at the benefit of coming back. Winning a 3rd title and becoming part of a very good defensive unit. He won't be getting chump change. Some of these football players don't manage their money during their careers and don't think of life after football . He can still get another payday even if it's two years if he continues to show that longevity and that's the big question mark with him.

Good point. He could be using interest from NE as a bargaining chip but it makes sense.

Why would he inform them he's leaving, he isn't obligated to do so.

I mentioned this in another thread talking about the plethora of deals we're making, but...

Everything we know about this franchise tells us they understand better than anyone about the cap and salaries and how to deal with it. This year, there's much more cap space around and teams also have to spend to the minimum. So it was a very uncertain situation, and many teams would no doubt want to wait and see how it plays out. We could look at one team doing different things than the others right off the bat and say "hmmm...they must think they know something and are rushing to take advantage of it before other teams figure it out." When it's the Lolphins, Jets or Bills doing it, one usually smiles and waits for the wreckage that inevitably follows. When it's Bill, I'd reckon that he's probably onto something.

As time goes on, the number and quality of free agents is diminishing, but there's still lots of cap space around. Teams are likely to have more money than value available soon and start to give out stoopid deals like they always do. Hell, we're more active than everyone but still have room for Dont'a AND Butler. And Bill is thinking that the market will rise more than usual due to the money around so is locking who he wants up as soon as he can so he doesn't have to address those areas.

Dont'a is also no dummy. He knows he'll get paid, so why not wait around to see if someone offers something silly? Maybe he wants to try playing on a bad team for once or to try to turn something around. I'm kind of surprised the Browns aren't looking at him. If I were the Jest, I'd offer him well over market just so they can stop being laughed at by the NY media and at the same time hurt the Patriots. Wouldn't want him playing there, but Harris is toast.

How far under the cupcake cap are we right now?

The longer this plays out..i think the more it helps our chances...teams interested in him have already moved on with TENN and MIA bringing in other LBs after he visited

I heard Hightower hated the cold. I get it; I moved from Maine (too cold) to Arizona (too hot) to northern California. I used to get seasonal depression during the winter months; maybe he/his family wanted a warmer climate and wanted to get closer to their home in the south, or at least I believe that's the case since he grew up in Tennessee and then went to Alabama. When I saw he was visiting the Titans, Dolphins, and had a meeting scheduled with the Saints, I thought, "good for him if that's what he wants."

Then there was the notion that he's trying to get the best contract possible, another one where all I can say is "happy hunting." I never blame athletes for taking more money, and for every city that is mad the person left, there is a new city that welcomes them. The NFL is a business, so as fans, deal with it. The Patriots could have franchised/extended him, and they took on the risk to get him cheaper this last year.

...but then, it isn't really about the money anymore, right? According to everyone on the inside, he is just not seeing the type of over-the-top deal he was hoping for.

And now...he is in the cold northeast meeting with teams that are (a) the Patriots biggest, most hated rival/doormat, and (b) the Patriots biggest AFC competitor...mind you, two teams who don't have a lot of cap room and don't even appear to be in the market for him besides their potential glee in screwing over the Patriots. The Jets are in complete cap hell with a roster full of replacement scabs from the strike season and not nearly enough money, while Hightower isn't even a great scheme fit there. The Steelers, schematically might make some sense, but they are never a big player in free agency, and they are already dealing with internal extensions and cap issues...I highly doubt they are going to blow him away with a huge offer. Both the Jets and Steelers appear to fall into the "we had absolutely no plans to sign this guy, but now that he appears to be wandering around the country aimlessly looking for a job, let's bring him in" category. We have seen other rivals make surprise runs at our players - notably Denver with Talib and Welker, or unsurprising runs, like the Jets with Revis, and those have always been full court presses with a huge offer coming out before free agency even officially begins, or outright tampering. This does not appear to be the case right now.

In conclusion, I just don't get it...I don't see how anyone can feel like Hightower really wants to return to the Patriots at this point. He may end up back here, yes, but this whole thing seems very strange...if he ends up signing elsewhere for roughly the same amount of money, or maybe just a little bit more, the story would make more sense than if he comes back. The idea that he is just making sure he has done his due diligence with other teams seems far-fetched. I can't recall another free agent of his caliber with multiple big offers on the table who has taken this long to make a decision. Every other guy in his situation has been off the board for almost a week and probably made their decision long before that.

If the Steelers are half decent at recruiting they will talk about hes going to the most winningist franchise the fact they are linebacking central Kevin Greene Greg Lloyd
Joey Porter they have a dominant offense with the best receiver runningback in football so they can score points in bunches.
They just need to give the young defense leadership this is where he comes in.
Hes going to be primarily used to get to the Quaterback.
Sell those points and money is right then Pitt should land Donta if hes non commital to the Pats
