All quiet on Hightower front or Dont'a-do-it FA tour

At first I was like "omg noooo" and then I was like "f*** the jests!!!", but ultimately I was like "this is bulls***."

Oh crap, this is terrible new! The Jets?!?!?!??! AAAaaaaaaaggggghhhhhhh!

Last time we got into a bidding war with them, they stole Revis from us...

Wrong.

The Patriots never got into a bidding war with the Jets over Revis.

Before releasing him, the Pats were informed by Revis what he was looking for in a new deal.

They politely excused themselves from the negotiations.

The Jets wound up bidding against themselves.

Why are you guys getting nervous about the Jets being in the mix? It's the Jets.
I'm not worried about him making the Jets better, I'm worried about us losing our best LB, only for him to go and ruin his career over there.

I want him to succeed. Here.

More guaranteed money, money talks especially when you already have 2 rings.

But if the $$ is similar why go there and be basically irrelevant for the rest of your career? They had to cut the fat George Foreman style just to stay under the cap. This would make no sense on both ends, but the Jets never make sense.

It was sarcasm...just a joke.

Jets overpaid to steal a Pats player, you see? Never mind, if I'm explaining the joke, it failed.

It's probably his agent floating the jets rumor out there to milk more money out of NE.

Conspiracy theory time:

Word has been circulating that the market for Hightower has been softer than anticipated, with one reason being that teams expect him to go back to the Pats and give them the chance to match. The Jets picture the Pats re-signing a key impact FA at a bargain price. They enter the "bidding" with the goal of making the Pats give up a bigger chunk of their salary cap to retain Dont'a.

Maybe?

So in theory they can afford him, but it'd be a dumb move on their part considering all the needs they have scattered across the roster. ILB is probably one of the only things they don't need.

Don't forget the 8 million gained once Sheldon is traded/released.

And more importantly, we do need to address ILB. I love Harris, but he is older. And he can be cut to save an additional 6.5 million with no cap hit at all.

Makes complete sense to go after Hightower. Either we'll get a younger player for not much more money than currently spending on Harris, or at least drive up the price for NE.

Win, win.

And then BB doesn't match and the Jets are stuck with a player they don't want and are now paying a premium for.

Ok...

Use the or or so the dim-witted slow-on-the-uptake poeple like me pick up on it.

I swear to Christ a NY Jets draft strategy meeting includes crayons, paper and Bob The Builder DVDs running in a continuous loop.

et tu dont'a? anybody but the jests!

Or you get someone like Zach Brown who would be better for value and better in coverage, frankly.

Ive been polluting this board with my support to sign Zach Brown if High splits.

I wonder if they project Roberts to be their Brown?

Hes OK but Van Noy is not the answer

Come on people let's just look at it here

It's reported Pats and Hightower are in good communication.

Titans are the only team that gets reported as having interest but then reports come out that at $10m per the would be out.

Then the lolphins get floated out there but then dies down.

Mark Ingram tweets that Hightower had a visit scheduled with the Saints but cancelled it.

Then a few Titans beat guys says they think Hightower to Titans isn't happening. Breer then reports that he talked to a team that was interested in him and they are convinced he'll return to NE. Which that team was most likely the Titans

Then today out of nowhere after 2 days of tampering and 4 days of FA the jests name pops up as being interested.

Meanwhile it is continually reported that the Pats still want Hightower to return.

Hightower's market is probably lower than the offer Pats gave to him earlier in the season which was $10m per.

Maybe i'm wrong but this just reeks of agent trying to make one last effort to get the team to raise the offer.

While also driving up his price tag. Could even address ILB in the draft.

Keep in mind though, if the Jets are considering replacing Harris, we need a bruiser to fill that roll for a 3-4. Took care of speed and coverage with Lee last year.

True but knowing a rebuild is happening we're looking at what 2019 before the jets seriously think about competing again. So you've be paying top ILB market value for Hightowers first two years of the deal. To me it makes more since to find Harris replacement through the draft on a rookie deal.

Right, I'm sure Hightower would be happy playing out his career in the Jersey swamps under their pathetic management, after only knowing the Patriots way of doing things.

It is cold there in the winter too, right?

Lmao if you think the Jets can get Belichick to budge on anything. It would however be just like the jets to try to fix a problem they don't have while ignoring all of the problems they do have.

I don't think it'll take that long to compete. Ha, for Woody's sake it better not. Too many entertainment options in NY combined with having some of the highest ticket/PSL prices, and 3+ years of not being competitive? ... It'd be a bad result.

They could be competitive next year.

But sure, it's possible to address the need via the draft. Again, at least this drives up the price for NE.

Think about it though. The Jets have like 42 million in cap space now (gotta factor in Sheldon leaving). That's like 5th or 6th most in the league. Wouldn't hurt to spend some of it on a quality FA. Hightower may be the best option.

We have 3 young LBs. Two guys entering their sophomore seasons and Mauldin entering his 3rd. Having a sold veteran at the position would be smart.

Who knows? I'm just happy for some interesting news. Boring FA for Jet fans so far. Curious to see how this plays out.
