Patriots Trade For Indy TE Dwayne Allen

What we know from his time with the Colts is that he can be a productive pass catcher.

We also know that BB likes his blocking. Most importantly, we know that BB usually maximizes the strenghts of his players.

So, the guy is a good blocker and can be a good pass catcher AND will get to play for BB in a system ran by Tom Brady. He should be able to shine. He will also have half the cap hit re-signing Bennett would have carried. There are no reasons to dislike this trade.

Good trade. The free agent market dried up so BB traded for an NFL ready tight end.
I still hope he drafts a tight end to develop. We don't know if Gronk can last a full season.

Pats trade for Dwayne Allen

Great deal imo, a 4th for Allen and a 6th. Takes care of TE for the next couple of seasons. He signed for 29 million last year and they will only owe him 17.4 over the next three seasons. Colts are signing Martellus Bennett. Younger, cheaper, and he can play both aspects of a two TE offense.

And they have a chance to get a forth round comp pick for Bennett. And Allen will make half as much as Bennett. And Allen is 3 years younger.

God, it's good to be a Pats fan!

Remember, due to the screw job from the NFL* the Pats' hands were tied and they couldn't even trade up in the 4th round or it would be confiscated.

I'll take Dwayne Allen and a side order of "**** you Goodell"!

I would have given up a 5th rounder for this guy. A 4th rounder? Idk. I think bill took a big gamble here. Had some hip issues last season as well.

Luuked - You don't waste money signing ERFAs if you think they are just OTA/Camp Bodies. You sign ERFAs because you believe there is a roster spot for them that is theirs to lose.. 11

As for your statement about the TE class, you're exaggerating and have bought into the hype. No. I won't be shocked, regardless of what happens. There have been plenty of times in the past where a particular position was "one of the most athletically gifted in a long time" and the Patriots had a need only to watch the Patriots NOT take someone at that position. Linebacker, in particular, stands out for me as one position that this happened. Also Defensive End.. And yet, The Patriots have kept on winning.. 7 SB appearances since 2001. 5 SB wins.

The only thing that "shocks" me is when Belichick steals a guy like Allen from another team..

I disagree completely about your ERFA statement. All of the "other" TEs that are under contract are longshots:

* Housler: out of league since September 2016,
* Williams: post-acl,
* Lengel: 1 ST unit, limited snaps, <5 receptions despite being #2 on the depth chart behind Marty - spells imminently replaceable..

Nobody here is breaking the bank when cut and quite honestly I don't think any of the three will be on the final roster with Housler having an outside chance if there is something left in him.

In terms of draft I haven't bought into any media hype and if you look through the draft board you can see that many there (including me) came to their conclusions almost independent on media coverage.

Midround pick trades are always a gamble. So I don't see your issue there. But Allen is better than the 2nd tier of TEs in this class. So you take that over the minor injuries (which he's played through with varying results) and the large cap hit that Bennett would have taken.

There is practically no difference in quality of players at that point anymore in the draft. You are just arguing for arguments sake.

Also you really have to explain where you see a big gamble. All I see is the total opposite..

Move down two rounds in the middle of the draft to get a talented, versatile TE for 3 years and $17M? Works for me. I'm not even a huge fan of Allen, but the guy is now cheaper than Jermaine Gresham. Makes him a borderline bargain in the current market.

Guessing you meant Daniel Graham who was never the receiver that Allen is.
I stand corrected, I meant Daniel Graham.

And Allen was never the receiver Allen WAS (in college), especially his last year in college. You'd have to say he was a slight bust in the pros.

Looks like he can catch and run pretty well.

LOVE this trade!

I cannot think of anything to say that's good or bad, it is was it is and BB has a history of liking so guess what.. that makes me happy too.
Let's just say, I doubt I'd buy his shirt lol Doesn't get the juices flowing.
