Patriots Trade For Indy TE Dwayne Allen

Granted the Colts aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, but they didn't sign the guy to the contract they did because he sucked.
Classic case of them over thinking a decent year by his backup (Doyle) due to Allen's injuries.
Gold star for the new GM.
Thanks.

They could have spended that 5 million on someone else. Hope i am eating crow and it works out.

Where Scott Chandler and Tim Wright failed is they were not good run blockers...hell not good blockers period. Allen will be useful in that department.

I honestly don't think Chandler was as bad as people make him out. He played the second half of the season on a ruined knee that eventually ended his career. He was pretty good until around the Giants game.

But yes the blocking is huge. On a slight tangent that is also the reason I don't see BB/Caserio seriously consider Adrian Peterson. He is an awful blocker which is a big no-no.

Allen was pretty good on his rookie year, good blocker, may not be as good as Bennett down the field or on the seam routes, but he is a solid tight end. For half the price of Bennett I'll take this deal any day.

The only thing is that we gave up a 4th, especially in a loaded draft like this year where you can still get great value in the 4th.

I see us more likely to trade Jimmy now and get some value picks in the 2nd and 3rd by trading down.

I am amazed that there were 139 views and 138 replies....all I can say is someone felt it unnecessary...

It's funny i said i would rather have Jack Doyle than Bennett for the next 3 years yesterday and got a bunch of dislikes then the Pats replace him with the guy who lost his job to Doyle

Gotta love being right

That's not being right about player quality. You're using a salary cap decision to claim your victory.

Yes but we get a 6th back and the difference between a 4th and 6th really isnt much

Allen only has $1m dollars guaranteed after 2017 ($0.5m in 2018 & $0.5m in 2019) so won't cost a ton to cut him if it does not work out on the field this year. Possibly even restructure next year for more guaranteed money and lesser cap hit if things do work out.

I saw a interview around Deflategate timeframe and wanted to dislike Allen but I couldnt I remember thinking at the time hes my favorite Colt player.

Lengel and Williams are glorified OTA/camp bodies. If you seriously believe that they will skip over one of the most athletically gifted TE classes in a long time you will be shocked in about 50 days.

I am still fully confident that they will go for a late d2/early d3 TE (Brittle ?) and then a very late project.

Luuked - You don't waste money signing ERFAs if you think they are just OTA/Camp Bodies. You sign ERFAs because you believe there is a roster spot for them that is theirs to lose.. 11

As for your statement about the TE class, you're exaggerating and have bought into the hype. No. I won't be shocked, regardless of what happens. There have been plenty of times in the past where a particular position was "one of the most athletically gifted in a long time" and the Patriots had a need only to watch the Patriots NOT take someone at that position. Linebacker, in particular, stands out for me as one position that this happened. Also Defensive End.. And yet, The Patriots have kept on winning.. 7 SB appearances since 2001. 5 SB wins.

The only thing that "shocks" me is when Belichick steals a guy like Allen from another team..

Not according to Colts fans.

The sentiment on their board is he cant block or catch for ****

hope they're wrong

Let's see. You hope the Colt's fan on a Colt's forum is wrong..... I say the odds on your side. Maybe not the "sun will rise tomorrow" odds but pretty close.

That 6th could be Mixon I still want the Tightend from the small school.

How are you not grasping the fact this makes much more sense then paying Bennett $9 mil a season?

Listen i knew bennet was not gonna come back. Why not just draft one of these stud tight ends. Why waste 5 million dollars on a guy that has been pretty much a dissapointment. I guess bill thinks he can turn it around. I would be ecstatic if he can break 500 yards receiving. He hasn't done that in 5 years.

He had 8 TDs in 2014. Who cares about yardage when you're in the endzone?
